09:33 PM ET 08.17 | While Mark Melancon has done a wonderful job filling in for injured Pittsburgh Pirates closer Jason Grilli, it appears the 2013 National League All-Star will be returning to mound in the near future. Grilli has already resumed his throwing program and could be back pitching in games by the first of September. Grilli's return should place him firmly in the closer chair, which would move Melancon back to his setup role where he has thrived this season. The move would would reinforce an already strong bullpen. The Pirates certainly want to get Grilli back into game shape prior to the playoffs, which would be the franchise's first postseason appearance since 1992.

That's great but pitching isn't a Pirate weakness. They still need offensive help and time is running out to do something about it.

I don't think they have missed him that much. Melancon only has one blown save in his absence, and that one happened only because Marte didn't catch a routine fly ball.
