Johnny Manziel comes by wildcatter spirit naturally

10:00 AM ET 08.18 | At first glance, Johnny Manziel bears only a passing resemblance to his late great-grandfather, fabled Tyler multimillionaire oilman Bobby Manziel. Peer closer, though, at old black-and-white photos of grinning Bobby, the right side of his mouth curving higher than the left. Confidently. Mischievously. College football fans know that smile. Texas A&M University sophomore quarterback and reigning Heisman Trophy winner Johnny exuded it until recently, when the NCAA began investigating whether he was paid thousands of dollars by one or more autograph brokers, perhaps jeopardizing his eligibility this season. Generally, folks in Johnny's and Bobby's hometown of Tyler don't seem surprised that another Manziel is suspected of skirting authority. Since ol' Bobby struck oil near Gladewater in 1931, more than a few among three generations of Manziels have been ensnared in the Smith County legal system. That isn't to say Tylerites aren't pulling for the NCAA to clear Johnny and for him to continue dazzling for the Aggies. It's just that the autograph-payment questions reported by ESPN's Outside the Lines raised eyebrows and concerns founded -- fairly or not -- in family reputation. "It's a sad thing," said 79-year-old Tyler oilman Bill Hughes, whose father, Kernel Hughes, was a wildcatter contemporary of Bobby Manziel's. "A lot of people around here murmured among themselves, coffee-shop talk. People said, "Oop, well, he's kin to the Manziels. He comes by it naturally."

I really want to see JM play this year especially against Alabama and LSU. But not if it means he gets away with breaking the rules.

As for the article, this is what happens when you draw too much attention to yourself. The press digs up dirt and puts it on the front page.

Everybody loves John John.

With his lawyers present, Johnny Hancock will give a presser before next weekend in which he admits to his role in the autograph scandal, throws Uncle Nate and the brokers under the bus, the lawyers then chime in and say that Manziel was victimized by greedy sycophants and demand the state of Texas sue the brokers under current law, rail against the NCAA and aTM for their incompetence in not protecting their client, and insist on reinstatement to full playing status after poor Johnny serves a two-game suspension. Then all will be right with the world.

It'll be a Manziel family deja vu moment all over again.

How many autographs can Manziel sign in 12 hours? Can he sell them for more than $2,200? If not, maybe he should take markjohn up on this deal.
