07:21 AM ET 08.19 | It seems the number No. 13, somewhat unfortunately, is available again in South Bend. Senior outside linebacker Danny Spond, in an emotional address to his Notre Dame football teammates after practice Saturday, announced he had come to a decision that a medical condition has finally truncated that particular dream. ... He entered August training camp and participated in early workouts as ND's No. 1 option at the drop (outside) linebacker, after starting 11 games and making 38 tackles there in 2012. "The specifics for me to stand up here and get into them are extremely complicated, relative to his medical condition," Irish fourth-year head coach Brian Kelly said Saturday, 14 days away from the team's season opener with Temple. ... Kelly said Spond and his family were expected to release a statement early next week.

Feel bad for the kid.......but face it he was not much of a LB if he was only averaging 3.5 tackles a game

First, ND loses it's starting QB to cheating. Then, the team is struck by medical attrition. 12-0 in 2013 is looking less and less likely.

Tin Man, In Diaco's system, this position is not a glamorous position
if you want to rack up a lot of pretty stats. It is based mostly on
correct responability in positioning and containing your area on the
edge. He funnels plays to his team mates to clean up the trash.
Not much edge rushing from this LB position that is up to the Cat Lb
and the inside guys get most of the tackles. Could end up being
a big loss since he was big and athletic, but this will move Jaylon
Smith into the lineup, who is not as big but more athletic. Smith
is just a true frosh so the experience could be missed.

Best of luck to this young man.

Thanks for the inside skinny. Recently, it seems that ND just isn't going to catch a break in the coming year. Even stacked deep on the roster, no team can withstand a higher level of attrition.

It's times like these where an undying belief in dumb effin luck will carry the day. It's August and we're undefeated.
