Gronk out Week 1, PUP possible

07:10 AM ET 08.20 | So, is there any chance? It is "not realistic" to expect New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski, who underwent offseason back and forearm surgery, to be ready to play in the team's regular-season opener against the Bills in Buffalo, sources familiar with the situation said Monday. "It's a huge stretch to think he could play against the Bills," the source said. Despite that, another source said Gronkowski "looks great, is doing great" during his workouts. ... Progress is being made, but not enough for there to be much confidence Gronkowski will be ready for the start of this season. Before then, one of the biggest roster decisions New England will have to make is whether to carry Gronkowski on the 53-man roster or place him on the physically unable to perform list.

He'll be a PUP.

They invented PUP so this does not have to be a big decision.

If he sits a few early games, which are against lesser opponents, maybe he can stay healthy through the playoffs this year.

Let's be real here... NE's schedule every season is full of "lesser" opponents.

Gotcha! You admitted it's always a powder puff schedule! My comment could have been taken as a compliment to "NE's superiority". :)

Nobody denies that the Jets, Bills and Dolphins have been bad for a 'while'. ;)

WTF? I can't "Quote" this morning.

Yes, Chico, we always have a powder-puff division schedule. But this year, we open against the Bills, Jets and Bucs.

This should not be a surprise to anyone who has been following the story: Three surgeries to clean out a stubborn infection, removing and replacing the plate in the forearm. Meanwhile Gronk partying like there's no tomorrow. Pats should treat him like the Ravens treated injured Ray Lewis last season: keep him on the available list but hold him out until the season gets critical.

The Pats have UDFA TE Sudfeld as a weapon at the TE position while Gronk is healing. Pats may have found another "joker" TE who can line up inside or on the outside to create a mismatch......Hernandez who?

If on the list at season's start PUP rules let you play in a game again no earlier than Week 7 and as late as Week 15. The PUP list is not something that lets a guy show up in week four in.
