Westbrook pitching himself out of work

07:18 AM ET 08.22 | Now what? Jake Westbrook is supposed to eat innings and provide stability for the Cardinals rotation. Instead, he has become a liability at the worst possible time. The veteran starting pitcher faced intense scrutiny Wednesday afternoon in Milwaukee. His previous 21 1/3 innings produced grisly numbers: 0-4 record, 10.13 earned-run average, 29 hits and 15 walks. With some of their younger pitchers showing signs of late-season strain, the Cardinals needed Westbrook to pull himself together. He didn't, despite having an early 7-0 to work with. ... But what do the Cardinals do with Westbrook now? Westbrook's next scheduled start is Monday against the Reds. Should the Cardinals go to Michael Wacha instead? Should they try Tyler Lyons or even Carlos Martinez? Our vote: Wacha.

He's certainly costing himself a lot of money since his contract is up at the end of the year. Westbrook has given then what he was signed to bring. This is him falling back to his norms after that unbelievably good start he had. I think he'll stablize at a 4 to 4.5 ERA unless he's injured. He was ridiculously lucky the first few months, now he's ridiculously unlucky.

just keep pitching him. he will work things out. He has pitched in some bad luck. some defensive lapses have cost him runs and sometimes low run support

With Wacha,Martinez, and Lyons ready for 14 all you can say to Westbrook is Happy Trails To You.

August 22, 2013  09:15 AM ET

Even though he has been better at home, I shudder at the thought of Jake making that start Monday against the Reds' offense. I don't think any of the young starters are truly 100% ready right now, but it can't get much worse than what Jake has given you lately.

As far as 2014 goes, I can't see any scenario where Mozeliak doesn't take the $1M buyout option and send Jake packing. He's got Wainwright, Miller, Lynn, Garcia, Kelly, Wacha and Martinez to fill 5 rotation spots next year. It's a no brainer.

August 22, 2013  09:26 AM ET

Westbrook is making $8.75MM this year. Now, that might seem like a boatload of money to everyday people like us, but that's pretty much market value for an average pitcher.

Some fans may have forgotten his first 14 starts this season where he averaged 6.1 innings per with a 2.95 ERA. Granted, his subsequent five starts have been UGLY, but a rational fan would expect the pendulum to swing the other way.

I can understand fans being frustrated, and could even understand the Cards skipping a start or so, but to act like the one year contract was a mistake, particularly a major one, is silly as hell.

I don't think it was a mistake to sign him when they did last year. It was a smart move to keep the veteran around as all the young arms continued to develop.

I like the idea of skipping a start. Let Wacha pitch Monday and give Jake some time to clear his head and get back in a groove.

My 2nd note to fannation

The issues with the site continue - this is at least day 3. I don't know what was done - but you have effectively started to drive away your customer base. If that is what you intended? Fine. It's working. Look at the comment counts. They have plummeted - I am sure your advertisers might see that as a loss of potential proceeds. This has gone on long enough......

Hope it gets fixed - someday.

Have him skip his next start and pitch either Lyons or Martinez, Wacha is having control problems and needs to work that out in the bull pen first.

Wacha, wacha, wacha, wacha.....

I thought he might be hurting. He's no Adam Wainwright, but he's much better than what we've been seeing lately.
