The Cowboys' disaster zone

07:12 AM ET 08.23 | Tony Romo may be in for another long season behind a line in flux. Don't bother listening to the spin coming from Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett or team vice president Stephen Jones -- the offensive line is a sports tragedy waiting to happen. And they all know it. Garrett tried to downplay the not so surprising revelation that starting right tackle Doug Free was working at guard on Wednesday. No big deal, says the coach. Only Free, according to Stephen Jones, is likely to see action at a position he has never played, including high school, when the Cowboys play the Bengals on Saturday night. The Cowboys have tried, and failed, to sign veteran Brandon Moore and Brian Waters since the start of training camp because they obviously do not like their current options at guard.

Romo to lead the league in picks......

August 23, 2013  07:50 AM ET

As much as I hate Mac Engel - he's right. The O-Line is a mess.

August 23, 2013  08:14 AM ET

It's been a mess for three years. They just don't seem to be doing anything about it.

August 23, 2013  08:23 AM ET

Not exactly Steve. They are trying to put a line together but they are doing it one piece at a time. 2 first rounds pick in the last 3 years, but the line was so bad before drafting Smith, doing it this way is a slow process. I'm thinking my 7-9 prediction was too optimistic!

August 23, 2013  08:34 AM ET

Their starting guard has not been cut by some other team yet. There are always a few players at last cuts that can help a team. Rookies always stay, vets always go.

August 23, 2013  09:03 AM ET

Picking up one lineman a year isn't going to get it done. Especially if the picks get the big contract and feel they don't have to put in the effort any more.

Romo is a sports tragedy that keeps happening over and over

Steve, your quotes 4 and 7 sound like you are talking about the Steelers....

Sorry guys, this line has improved over last season...

Smith is only getting better, Leary is beating out Livings at Guard and Frederick is showing in camp that he is a solid Center. That is 3 improvements right there.

They are using Free at Guard right now to get him camp reps in case of emergency during the season.

I am not saying they are going to blow people away but if this running back group can produce, it will take pressure off of Tony and they can win games.

I think 9-7. But the focus of recent high picks on the line is very encouraging...I just wish that they had gone that route this PAST season vs getting a Gavin Escobar.

August 23, 2013  10:12 AM ET

Leary is out injured. He's not beating anyone right now. I agree they should have drafted another lineman instead of a TE. Maybe JJ still doesn't realize you have to block before you can pass. Escobar seems to be less of a blocking TE, which made the pick even less sense given their serious need on the o-line.

August 23, 2013  10:14 AM ET

A left tackle and a center are no doubt a start, but I'm just not feeling it at the other three spots and it only takes one weak link to blow the season.

I heard his brother Bob was pretty good with that sort of thing.

Honestly, their OL is no better or worse than a lot of teams. I watch Deil stand there like a doorman and just shake my head. Every team has issues.

August 23, 2013  11:12 AM ET

ooops! Just read Diehl is out six weeks with a thumb injury. Must have tried to hitch a ride with the last colt DE that ran by him..

A lot of teams hope to rise to mediocrity, but this is Dallas. Unfair expectations or not, Dallas fans expect to win the SB every year. Obviously they don't succeed but that doesn't stop the expectations. Anything falling short of that goal is a failure. Some teams hope to get to 50/50 this year, some are hoping for a playoff spot but Dallas has to shoot for the whole enchilada every year.
