07:11 AM ET 08.23 | As the sand slips through the hourglass of preseason, Texans safety Ed Reed will head to see his doctor in Vail, Colo. Reed, 34, has been on the physically unable to perform list since training camp began. The Texans are attempting to have the five-time All-Pro ready in time for a Sept. 9 regular-season opener at San Diego. Reed's operation was done by Marc Philippon, an orthopedic surgeon in Vail, who's considered one of the world's leading hip specialists. Philippon had also operated on Reed's other hip while he was with the Ravens. "The surgeon will take a last look at him. ... That's going to be the last step, then he'll be back for good and he'll start working toward hopefully getting back on the field," Kubiak said Thursday during a media interview.

At 34 with two hip operations it's hard to believe he'll come all the way back. Ravens might have known that it was time to bail.

Too many miles, hard miles. The Ravens got a lot faster the day he left. Great career but the tank is empty..

I thought he would last a couple of more years after Hines Ward retired and wasn't around to bust him up

Ed Reed is another Tony Boselli, an injured, over the hill player that the Texans wasted money and a roster spot on.

There might be a clinic in Miami to solve this.

The local radio guys think that Reed is going to retire without ever trying the hip on the field.

That wouldn't surprise me. What did surprise me was the deal Houston gave Reed. Way too much guaranteed money...

Houston is so close to being a champion, they can taste it. When you're that close you tend to take risks you shouldn't. This is a prime example.

2 hip surgeries by 34 and still trying to play? He'll be in a wheelchair by the time he's 50.

I think if the Ravens hadn't spent so much on Flacco then asked Reed to take a pay cut, he might have decided to retire on his own. But nothing motivates a dirty bird like the idea that someone, somewhere in the world, is disrespecting them. So he's going to try to prove their mistake.
