Vince Young to win Packers back up QB job?

12:40 PM ET 08.24 | It's certainly been a roller coaster career for quarterback Vince Young. What started with elevated draft status coming out of the University of Texas quickly sank after poor performances as a member of the Tennessee Titans. Young caught a slight reprieve in a short stint with the Philadelphia Eagles, but that too failed, leaving the former third overall pick jobless for the 2012 season. Determined not to just become another statistic (or JaMarcus Russell), Young continued to put forth the effort needed to make an NFL roster and will likely be named the Green Bay Packers backup quarterback.

VY has been a grown man in body for some time now. His mind just needs to catch up.

Take away the question mark in the headline. Flynn has already been released.

Releasing Harrell was a no-brainer for the Packers. The man was afraid of his own shadow on the field. At least Young can run for his life when the O-line collapses.

My team's QB is Christian Ponder. I thought he was afraid of his own shadow until I watched Harrell last night.

Just for giggles, I checked the Milwaukee Sentinel's blog on it. Not much love for Harrell there, nor for the HC, which kinda surprised me.

No worry for young Harrell... Looks like there might be an opening with the Jets.

And the Bills. Kolb had his umpteenth concussion.

I thought Vince retired due to very bad knees that were swollen after just practicing? Have we been conned?

What the hell? Kevin "iron man" Kolb injured?

There's a reason why VY has an NFL job. Some QBs never learn to duck.

And that's something to celebrate????

Vince, open up a savings account at your neighborhood Green Bay bank.

Why would you even make that connection, outside of physical appearance?

They have completely different playing styles (JaMarcus had almost no mobility at all) and Vince Young has already lasted twice as long in the NFL. As disappointing as VY's career has been, he's been infinitely better than JaMarcus Russell.

That's all I'd really want/expect out of a 3rd-string QB.

Once your team is down to its emergency quarterback, the season is all but over, especially in today's pass-happy league. There is no efficient 3rd-string pocket passer in the NFL. Might as well have a scrappy guy who can pick up a few first downs with his legs.

I still wonder, just how did Harrell stay there for three years? Oh, I know. He filled a spot, was cheap, meant that the team could spend time filling other needs and Oh, he filled a spot they weren't planning on needing.
Now that they understand the O line is the worst in football, Rogers days are numbered, they really do need a backup. The GM of this team may be almost as inept as the Jets. They draft a DE who plays one plan and gets hurt. They draft a running back who has not O line to block and gets minus 5 yards. Ya this is a superbowl bound team. Wake up people the Pack go 0-5 and finish 6-11.

The Packers will be in bad shape if anything happens to Rodgers, with Young as the back-up.

August 25, 2013  12:46 PM ET

Maybe VY is bringing the Dream Team to GB.

Dream Team

I wonder how many times VY's already been asked not to utter those two words.

That thought should be all the motivation the O-line needs to keep Rodgers upright and healthy.

Not sure if the Packers are as good as they were the last few years. Something was missing last year.
