Will Geno Smith win Jets' starting quarterback job by default?

08:49 AM ET 08.25 | Geno Smith had lost the Jets' starting quarterback job to Mark Sanchez in a dreadful audition against the Giants until Rex Ryan may have handed it right back to the rookie, who is clearly not ready to play, with a damaging rookie coaching mistake. Smith was so bad against the Giants -- three interceptions and then a safety when he stepped out of the back of the end zone -- that Sanchez became the best alternative to start the season opener in two weeks against the Bucs, even if it was by default. That's why Ryan's decision to put Sanchez in the game for the first time, behind the second-team offensive line, with 11:21 remaining in the fourth quarter of the Jets' 24-21 overtime victory was a reckless coaching move.

If Sanchez has a broken collar bone or separated shoulder then yuup. The Jets should just fire Ryan now and save us all from countless T&R posts.

QB situation goes from bad to worse.

Sexy Rexy knows how to draft em.

Look if Geno was the man he would have started all three games and been getting ready to take the reins. Practice is where the real tape is and obviously the Jets haven't liked where Geno is going. I said it before, I have this gutt feeling he is another Travaris J, who for three years in Minny could run, pass and do all the things but one: couldn't read an NFL defense to save his life. Intereception city. Hey I may be right about Geno.
Luck, Wilson and RGIII didn't need time to develop so why does a guy who was supposedly going in the first need all this time? There has to be a why and I think we saw it last night.

The Jets are going to be hilarious this year. You know, in a sad pathetic sort of way.

The New York Maple Jets?

NY has the most negative sensationalized media of any city in America. It's unfortunate that Geno Smith has to put up with all the scrutiny before he has a chance to develop. It's also unfortunate that he plays for such a clueless self-aggrandizing coach.

" so why does a guy who was supposedly going in the first need all this time? "

Nobody thought he was first round material except Mel Kiper and if he knew what he was doing he'd be a NFL GM instead of another talking head for Disney Inc. The Jets have a serious problem when it comes to evaluating college talent and I don't think they can look at their own roster and see what needs help. Rex was a mistake, he was a good DC but he's not a head coach and last night's decision was not surprising. The Jets are a dumpster fire and it's Woody's fault.

I don't care what the reason is.....I am thrilled mark will be on the benchIs rather go 3-13 with geno and maybe....he learns and there is a future thereRather than go 4-12 with a lame duck qb who 100% won't be on the roster next year.Geno made some bad decisions....but he's a rook and should learnMark is entering his 5 th year and makes similar mistakes....its OVER for hkm

Pete Carroll pleaded with Sanchez ... tried to convince him to stay another year and develop before going pro. Did he listen? No.

I personally think Sanchez' game is limited "between the numbers" so to speak. He doesn't appear to possess the arm strength for throws outside the numbers with the necessary velocity.

Geno lit it up in college but he relied on his superior athletic ability when the plays broke down. He needs time to develop under center and work on his decision making. It's not like college where you might face a All-American pass rusher once a season. It's every week in the NFL.

A rebuilding season in 2014 will show more promise than anything Rex puts together in 2013.
