10:00 AM ET 08.25 | 'Sometimes you just have to shock the world." With that one tweet, Prime Prep star point guard Emmanuel Mudiay set the basketball recruiting world on fire as speculation grew that he would pull off the ultimate shocker and commit to SMU, a team that hasn't made the NCAA Tournament since 1993, over traditional powerhouses such as Kentucky and Kansas. On Saturday night, Mudiay made it official when he orally committed to SMU at halftime of the Under Armour Elite 24 game. "I'm going to attend SMU with coach Larry Brown," Mudiay announced during a live broadcast on ESPNU. "That's where my heart's at. I have real respect for [Brown]." The 6-4 Mudiay is ranked as the nation's top point guard and third-best overall recruit by Scout.com. Oral commitments are nonbinding. Nov. 13 is the first day a basketball player in the Class of 2014 can sign a national letter of intent. While building something truly special in his hometown certainly played into his decision, Mudiay ultimately sided with the Mustangs for the opportunity to develop under Brown, a Hall of Fame coach. Throughout the recruiting process, Mudiay said he was focused on finding a coach that could help him be a dominant force not only in college but also in the NBA. "Coach Brown is a legend," Mudiay said at the Great American Shootout last month. "I've said before that I feel I can learn a lot from him because he has so much experience. There are a lot of great coaches out there, but he's one of the best."
