Notre Dame's ultimate wild card

07:22 AM ET 08.26 | Chuck Martin, who has been thinking about offenses for the better part of his career, had to pivot recently. "That's a good question," Martin mulled when asked recently whether refurbished Notre Dame quarterback Tommy Rees' arm strength had progressed to the point that opposing defenses and their coordinators were going to respect it. Another pause. "(As a) defensive guy, would I respect Tommy Rees' arm strength?" said Martin, entering his second year as the Irish offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. "Probably not." That's not to say that the tsunami of chatter about the emergence of a true Tommy Rees version 2.0 is more embellishment than genuine, but it does underscore what's been percolating since [May]: ... Rees is the ultimate wild card in a 2013 season that kicks off [Saturday].

On the one hand the Irish would not have gone 12-0 during the regular season last year had it not been for Rees. On the other hand the Irish would not have gone 8-5 the season before had it not been for Rees...

Blame Jabba the Weis for your QB issues. I blame him for UF's issues last year and for sure the year before that.

Fricking coaching from the cooler on the sideline. At least he got a promotion off the UF coaching staff.

From 8-5 to 12-0. That sounds like improvement to me.

Him getting kicked out of school for cheating.

Rees is not some walk on with little ability. He was recruited for a reason and if last year is a trend, then it is the defense that carried the team anyways. He does not have to be superman, just not be stupidman for them to have a very good season.

According to one of your Michigan heros (Jim Harbaugh) academic malfeasance was not only tolerated but encouraged in Ann Arbor...and I quote... "Michigan is a good school and I got a good education there, but the athletic department has ways to get borderline guys in, and when they're in, they steer them to courses in sports communications. They're adulated when they're playing, but when they get out, the people who adulated them won't hire them."

September 7th will provide a huge indication of where ND and Michigan are at as ball clubs.

May the best team win.

Good call. I still think this is one of the best sites that has a mix of different teams. Most other sites are 90% trolling.

Amen! Both teams need that win badly (ND to show that last year they didn't just have horseshoes up their a _ _ and Michigan to help legitimize Hoke as the guy with the right plan to get them back to thumping OSU).

Agreed.

Should be an awesome scene at the "Big House" (2nd night game ever - 1st was ND two years ago) with 115,000 in attendance.
