Nets considered adding Jason Collins

07:09 AM ET 08.26 | Jason Kidd believes Jason Collins still has an NBA future, and he expects his friend to sign with a team before the season. But it won't be the Nets. "He wants to play still, but we have 15 [roster] spots already filled," the new Nets coach said Sunday. In April, Collins became the first active male athlete from one of the four major professional sports to announce his homosexuality. Kidd was among several athletes who voiced their support, and in June, the Nets reportedly had interest in signing Collins, a free-agent center. Kidd said that possibility was something the organization "talked about over the summer" but likely won't pursue now. "His knowledge as a veteran ... can help a young team," Kidd said of Collins, a Nets teammate for seven years. "He'll find a job at some point."

Clipps should pick him up instead of the HOF Jamison.

To be fair, there are several teams that can use a backup big to take a few fouls and get 3-4 boards for 10-12 minutes for minimum pay.

To think that there is no hatred is being very naive.

Perhaps he can play in the WNBA.

Perfect, since he has no balls.

How long is the media going to milk this? If Collins weren't 7 feet, he'd be stocking shelves at Wal-Mart.

Wow all this talk about where Jason Collins a career backup journeyman is going to play. Had Collins not come out of the closet. Nobody would care or know who Jason Collins is.

If he could do more then just bring 6 fouls and 3 rebounds a game. He might have a team sign him.

bingo-there is'was a reason for his 'decision' to come out now, when he KNEW his career was basically over- he was looking for his last ditch effort for some publicity and a last contract from some owner who's trying to get ahead in the the PR/marketing department of being the first owner to welcome in the first non hetero male into the fold

If Jason Collins could bring 15 points, 9 rebounds, 1 or 2 blocks a game. He would have had no problem signing with any team. But all Jason can bring is 6 fouls, 3 rebounds, and maybe 3 to 4 points a game if your lucky.

But of course if Jason isn't playing in the NBA next season. There's going to be people out there that say the only reason Jason not playing is because he's gay.

No the reason why no team has signed Jason Collins is he can't bring anything to a team that signs him.

You People make me sick-- At any given time there are 450 players in the NBA. Those 450 players are among if not the best basketball players in the world. For 15 years Jason Collins was a member of that group. How many of you big talkers were ever among the 450 best of anything in the world, let alone be among the 450 best for 15 straight years. Oh and I am sure he did this for his "fifteen minutes of fame." It is abundantly clear from reading these moronic comments that staying in the closet would have been the easy choice.

There are many players in the league that actually only do what you stated - 6 fouls, 3 boards and 3-4 points. And they do have a role as backups.

The hate some of you guys spew is mind boggling.

What hate? I don't care if Jason Collins is gay or not. All I'm saying is that if Jason's isn't signed to a team before training camp. Then there's going to be some people out there that say the reason why he isn't on a team is because he's gay.

No the reason why he isn't signed on to a team now is he has very low numbers and doesn't bring much to the game. 3.6 points, 3.8 rebounds, 0.5 blocks, and 41 percent shooting from the field. That's Jason Collins's career stats. Last season with the Celtic's he averaged 1.2 points a game. With Washington, Jason averaged 0.7 points a game.

If I'm a general manager of a team. Why would I sign a player that's and the end of his playing career who was average at best. When I can go out a take a flyer on a young player that wasn't drafted or playing Europe and see what I can get.

It was a PR stunt and nothing else. His fianc?? Carolyn Moos had no idea until the story broke on SI. They had been together 8 years and she had no clue.
