Broncos courting RB controversy

07:13 AM ET 08.27 | At what point does three -- Montee Ball, Ronnie Hillman and Knowshon Moreno -- become a crowd? While a flock of reporters waited Monday for Montee -- the rookie running back getting first-team reps -- I quietly called over Knowshon Moreno, who many see as the Broncos' third-best back but a man who can't seem to do much wrong this preseason. ... I don't know if [Moreno's] knee is ready for 15 carries a game. The setback in camp was a reminder to take it slow. But right now, the Broncos have three exclamation points at receiver and three question marks at running back. It will be fascinating to see how quickly the coaches take carries away from Hillman and how confident they are, or aren't, with giving touches to Moreno.

I think RB is the least of their worries. Peyton can make an average RB look good. I think they should trade or pick up a pass rusher.

Where's the story here? It'll play itself out. Always does. One guy wll own the job and the other two will play themselves out of it. Happens every year.

They are not and will not be a running team. Pick a guy who can pass-protect.

Still... Peyton won his SB with Addai being a significant threat.

I'm not so quick to diminish this.

They need a running back, and the three people listed in the story aren't going to be able to do the job. Willis McGahee anyone?

August 27, 2013  09:38 AM ET

Sooner or later everyone, including RBs, will realize that having multiple backs is beneficial to everyone. The team always has one or more healthy RBs, and the career of each individual back can be extended by not burning them out on 25-30 carries per game. Give up a little of the spotlight for a longer, healthier career.

If Hillman keeps fumbling and the opponents keep running it back for a TD the "crowd" will be down by a third.

I give Peyton most of the credit. Addai couldn't get a job at UPS without him.

They might be a running team a little more than usual when it gets frosty and Peyton turns into Peyton Favre.

And Montee Ball can't pass block, so he's not going to see much time either. Like I said, paging Willis McGahee... if he's healthy.

Now that the "Manning back to football" excitement is over, look for the Broncos to have a down year. Too many missing pieces.

August 27, 2013  10:39 AM ET

Offense wont be an issueBroncos are missing their 2 top pass rushers from last yr and the best way to defend Peyton is by keeping him off the field running the ball which teams have been very successfull doing in preseason

August 27, 2013  10:41 AM ET

In Denver altitude, with Manning's pace of play, you need 2 RB's at a minimum. There is no controversy.

Ronnie runs the ball a lot like Terrell Davis used to run - one move and power. Montee Ball has that dancing style of running. They should be a great duet for a few years.

August 27, 2013  11:42 AM ET

Last year Knoshon was in the coaches doghouse after he fumbled in week 2. He did not play again until week 7. He realized ball control is paramount and did not fumble again the rest of the year - he got the message. Hillman can't seem to hold the ball in pre-season. He will learn that lesson too. Montee can't pick up the blitzes yet and runs tentative. Of the 3 Knowshon looks the best and has the knowledge needed to protect too.

It's not beneficial not knowing if you have Montee Ball on your fantasy team. He could be a home run or a timeshare nightmare.

The Broncos are a popular Super Bowl pick, just like the Nationals and Blue Jays were popular World Series picks. I'm not buying it.

August 27, 2013  01:47 PM ET

That is an irrelevant comparison. Top pitchers have bad games, and when they do there is little way to recover. That's ok, they have 162 games to absorb a handful of bad starts.

Denver has defensive issues, it's what ended their season last year (along with a couple of odd coaching clock management choices). They are still going to go out every week and put up at least a season average of 28 points.

As for SB pick - I don't buy that either, but getting a bye into the playoffs isn't a far stretch.

It's about football, not fantasy.
