Harvey's injury inevitable

07:25 AM ET 08.27 | Of all the uncertainties in baseball, the constitution of a pitching arm remains among the most confounding. There is one truth about the pitching arm, and it is the most unsatisfactory sort: nobody fully understands it. ... None could figure it out in time to save Matt Harvey. The breakout star of 2013 is broken, the ulnar collateral ligament that holds together his right elbow partially torn. ... It is devastating not just for Harvey and the poor, poor Mets but all of baseball. No sport loses as many players to the same catastrophic injury as baseball does the elbow. Among pitchers, there is almost an inevitability to their elbow blowing out, to the point of engaging in gallows humor when it does. Said one person close to Harvey: "The rite of passage with big arms."

Guess that that forearm tenderness and tightness he's been experiencing the past two months was actually an indication of something. But other than that who knew?

Quit babying these people. If your arm gives out half-way through the season, you're obviously doing something wrong. Stop limiting innings. When we were kids, pitchers threw until they were done. Now it's planned. Kind of stupid IMHO.

These guys are putting tremendous torque on their arms every pitch. Pitchers didn't do that in the past. Even the fastball is now snapped off violently in order to put movement on the pitch. So yes, I think every young pitcher who has been putting extreme torque on his arm is going to need TJ surgery eventually.

I believe you are absolutely correct. The overhand motion is NOT a natural motion for the human body. And the continued pursuit of the 100 MPH flame thrower, with movement, is going to guarantee the need to rebuild just about everyone who throws mid-90's and above; eventually. The ones that will have the least possibility will be the relievers, because of the lack of innings. More and more that darned knuckleball (even at velocity) is looking like the pitch you want - if you want to stay around for a long time with minimal injuries due to arm motion.

Anyone left on here this morning?

Let's get one of these turned over.

Like this one about Harvey.

August 27, 2013  10:25 AM ET

The crap about the Astro's is old hat, as far as owners hiding their finances.

August 27, 2013  10:26 AM ET

As far as Giants players..... who the heck knows?

August 27, 2013  10:27 AM ET

The Triple Crown pursuit by Cabrera - is a cool thing. Don't have one for 40 years, then have the same guy do it twice in a row? That would be something.

August 27, 2013  10:28 AM ET

And we don't need a Yankmees thread clogging up the comment counts. Hughes has been jerked around by the NYY's..... let him go somewhere else - and see if he can get confidence in his stuff.
