Challenges of broadcasting golf

Golf is a quiet sport, a genteel pastime played on lush greenery before hushed crowds. But the atmosphere in the CBS Sports control room at Pebble Beach this week is anything but laid back. While other sports tend to be more uptempo and packed with fast action, they are considerably easier to produce for a television audience, according to the crew at the AT&T. The challenges of a golf telecast are much tougher. Golf does not have a halftime or timeouts, and the players don't have numbers on their backs. Plus, instead of one ball to follow, the TV production staff at the Pebble Beach tournament must pay attention to three courses, each with 18 active holes and four players per hole. So the production crew goes three straight hours with hardly a moment's rest, said Lance Barrow, CBS Sports' coordinating producer for golf and football. The CBS crew working this week in Pebble Beach is on the road for about 20 weeks during football season and up to 22 weeks during the golf circuit.

I really feel for these guys, they actually work 3 straight hours without a break...wow...three straight hours. I've watched a lot of sports in my time and I've noticed something. In racing, they are almost always covering the leaders unless there is a wreck or something interesting in the back of the field. Basketball they follow the guys with the ball. Hockey they follow the puck. Why don't they just televise and show the top 3 in the field of the tournament. Because lets be honest, as soon as Tiger hits the course that is usually the only player they follow anyway unless he's between holes and then they throw a bone to someone who just sank a shot from 150 yards out.
