Matheny becoming increasingly hostile

07:23 AM ET 08.30 | Depending on your perspective, the Cardinals took two days off before their road trip, including one Wednesday night against the Reds. Some press box observers believed [Adam Wainwright] had a problem getting loose during the pregame warmup; he seemingly took some extra time to stretch. The relevant parties denied this after the game. The increasingly and bizarrely petulant manager Mike Matheny resorted to spitting out one-word answers and tapping impatiently on the interview podium in a childish response to reasonable postgame questions. Wainwright -- as usual -- gave mature, thoughtful, forthright adult answers when asked about his condition. "I felt fine. What can you say? I pitched terrible and that's why we lost the game," he said.

He just watched his team lose 10-0 to the Reds. Did you think he would be turning cartwheels?

Not wanting to spend more time with the Post-Dispatch? Horrors.

Trouble in the gateway city?

It's part of his job, so he should put his big boy pants on and talk to the reporters.

Maybe the lucky breaks aren't happening as frequently as they were earlier in the season and we're seeing his true mettle now?

The linked article has nothing to do with this. There's no information for these observations, like what were the reasonable questions?

Never would it enter this writer's mind that managers can have bad days too.

Maybe Matheny didn't want to be the one to say Wainwright and the offense sucked Wednesday night.

The breaks like losing 2 of his top three starting pitchers to start the season?

Fair enough, but he's the skipper he should feel comfortable enough with his authority to state the obvious that the entire team stunk it up Wednesday.

The team tanked in a game..... not on purpose. It happens.... doesn't mean the manager has to like it..... he's a competitor also......

I saw the first part of the game. Wainwright, left the ball out over the plate, a lot. AND - the Reds were even hitting his good pitches. It happens. But as a manager, you protect your players, even when they suck. So - with nothing positive to say - he simply gave monosyllabic responses.......
