07:23 AM ET 08.30 | Depending on your perspective, the Cardinals took two days off before their road trip, including one Wednesday night against the Reds. Some press box observers believed [Adam Wainwright] had a problem getting loose during the pregame warmup; he seemingly took some extra time to stretch. The relevant parties denied this after the game. The increasingly and bizarrely petulant manager Mike Matheny resorted to spitting out one-word answers and tapping impatiently on the interview podium in a childish response to reasonable postgame questions. Wainwright -- as usual -- gave mature, thoughtful, forthright adult answers when asked about his condition. "I felt fine. What can you say? I pitched terrible and that's why we lost the game," he said.

Never would it enter this writer's mind that managers can have bad days too.

Maybe Matheny didn't want to be the one to say Wainwright and the offense sucked Wednesday night.

Fair enough, but he's the skipper he should feel comfortable enough with his authority to state the obvious that the entire team stunk it up Wednesday.

The team tanked in a game..... not on purpose. It happens.... doesn't mean the manager has to like it..... he's a competitor also......

I saw the first part of the game. Wainwright, left the ball out over the plate, a lot. AND - the Reds were even hitting his good pitches. It happens. But as a manager, you protect your players, even when they suck. So - with nothing positive to say - he simply gave monosyllabic responses.......
