Hokies take another significant injury hit

07:25 AM ET 08.30 | Virginia Tech now has a very big hole to fill -- specifically, about 6-foot-4 and nearly 250 pounds. Starting tight end Ryan Malleck will miss the season after suffering a labral tear in his left shoulder at an Aug. 20 practice, the Hokies announced in Thursday's injury report. He'll have surgery soon and will use this as a redshirt season, returning in 2014 as a junior. Running back J.C. Coleman is listed as questionable with an ankle injury, meaning he has a 50 percent chance of playing. That also applies to offensive lineman Mark Shuman. ... [Coaches were optimistic that Malleck] was primed for a breakout season. He started seven games last year and caught 17 passes for 174 yards, but he was expected to be a major receiving option in new coordinator Scot Loeffler's offense.

Bama 78-0.

I saw Bama throttle Vippy Sue 77-6 back in the early 1970s. First string offense started the first series, scored a TD; then the Bama special teams blocked punts for TDs the next two Hokie series. When the offense came out again for Bama, the startes sat down and Bear went straight to the second string, already ahead 21-0 in the first quarter. I think the only Bama players that didn't play were their punters.

Don't think Saban will run up the score - it doesn't seem his style. Besides, he has a bigger game in a couple of weeks. Once the game is secure, he'll start rotating in the backups.

And as far as this story goes, it just confirms and repeats some earlier stories. VT is suffering big time with injuries and attrition. They've lost 17 scholarship athletes (not graduates/early departures) since the bowl game. They're down to to a true freshman as a starting running back, a freshman for the left tackle, and former walk-ons for some key defensive and o-line positions (some of who now have some of those vacated scholarships). Their QB is a good athlete, but he's about the only one not hurt, and he doesn't have the cast to hold up for 60 minutes against a top team.

Coach Saban almost always calls off the dogs when we hit 40. And gets mad if we score after he calls off the dogs.

I'm guessing Coach Beamer will retire after this season. If a program is a reflection of the coach, then it has the appearance of being very tired and listless.

Remember the Sooners a few years back bragging about scoring 70 points on multiple opponents? It became their moniker for a BCS NC invite.

Don't exaggerate or anything...LOL

They scored 60 in 5 games in a row....playing such weak LSOP's like Nebraska (5-4 at that game), TAMU (4-6), TT (10-1), Okie Lite (9-3) and Missu (in the BigXII CCG).

Them nasty, good for nothing Land Thieves.....

But it did give them enough "style" points to get ranked over TU. :)

Wasn't that the year da Gatuhs held them to 14 in the BCSCG?

Yep....that's cuz the Sooners were tired from all that scoring.done before that game.

He will put in second and third string as soon as the game is in hand. He never trys to run up the score. The only thing is the second and third string for Bama could be a first string on any other team. I can see a 49-0. Maybe a little higher like 52-0 or 55-0.

Plus he needs to get a backup QB/heir apparant some reps as quickly as possible. Seems the one thing Saban can't keep is a backup QB.

I do feel bad for VT losing all thos eplayers to injuries. I hope they have speedy recoveries. Iknow it does not help for the here and now, but maybe they can get some back before it gets to late in the season, and pull out a decent year. Best of luck to you VT.
