Rex Ryan lacking confidence in Geno Smith?

08:50 AM ET 08.31 | The quarterback competition that won't end will drag on for a few more days at least. Jets coach Rex Ryan would not divulge who his starting quarterback will be when the regular season opens on Sept. 8 against Tampa Bay. Ryan would not say much of anything on a conference call with reporters yesterday. "You can assume [the competition] is ongoing if we haven't announced anything yet," Ryan said. "I think that would be fair." There is nothing left to evaluate, of course, except Mark Sanchez's latest MRI exam results. Sanchez's shoulder seems to be the only thing preventing the Jets from naming him the starting quarterback. Sanchez still is not throwing and the chances of him playing against the Buccaneers are growing slimmer by the day. If rookie Geno Smith had beaten out Sanchez, there would be nothing preventing Ryan from naming him the starter right now. His hesitation to name the starter is a clear admission Sanchez got the better of Smith in the preseason.

The entire NFL lacks confidence in Rex Ryan so I guess it's a wash.

August 31, 2013  09:07 AM ET

He should. If he didn't then he would be totally out of the loop and over the edge.

These writers are more redundant than a coke head.

Is it really a QB competition if they both suck?

Right about now Rex could fall in a barrel of **** and come out sucking his thumb.

Toe.

Hey Rex. You can't hide the fact that this guy can't play. Give him the chance at least to bomb or succeed. Quit playing with his life. His former coach said he was a student of the game. I've seen students pick up a paper read it once and have it down and others could read it for ever and not get it. Which kind of student is this guy Rex. Lets find out on the field just like we did with Tebow last year.

mark stinks and has no future with the organizationgeno isn't ready, but could be part of the futureI don't see why there is even the slightest question. stick the rook in and let him learn/grow....let him take his lumps and we can see if he has some potential- we won't learn anything if he's holding a clipboard

Two words: David Carr.

True. Hadn't thought of that one. And then there are the times he got all up in Eva Longoria. I guess he's not a total loser.

If youtube vids are any measure, then at least he is not letting all the bad press get him down and stop him from having a good time.

I can understand the hesitation of sending a brand new, right out of the box QB against the big boys this soon. A little faster when the starters play, and the blitz comes...
