09:31 AM ET 08.31 | Seneca Wallace's phone buzzed Friday, with texts and calls with news circulating of his supposed retirement from the NFL. The news came as a shock to everyone " Wallace included. Contrary to multiple reports, the former Iowa State quarterback said he hasn't retired from the NFL after being released by the San Francisco 49ers this week. "I have not retired," Wallace said in a phone interview with the Register. "I have just removed myself from the San Francisco situation because it wasn't a perfect fit for me." Rumors of Wallace's retirement began circulating Friday following comments made by San Francisco coach Jim Harbaugh to various news outlets. "It's something that was his decision," Harbaugh said, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. "He felt strongly about it. I don't talk people out of that. I've never seen it done on game day, but I wish him well." But Wallace, a 33-year-old veteran, said he asked for and was granted his release from the 49ers, who brought him on after he was released from the New Orleans Saints. Wallace, who starred at Iowa State in 2001 and 2002, had hoped that he could catch on with the 49ers. But he said Friday he felt the team never had any intention of giving him a real chance. He said the thought reason he was brought in was to help encourage contract talks with 49ers quarterback Colt McCoy. "I've been around this game long enough where I can see what's going on," Wallace said, "and I realized right away the reason they brought me here was to get Colt to take a pay cut." According to reports, McCoy's salary was reduced earlier this week.

Colt got beat up in Cleveland and I thought James Harrison's hit ended his career. Nice to see him still hanging on.

Nothing personal, it's just business.

Maybe this is true. It happens.

Yes it does. Just like the tackle the Bears just cut after they just had him agree to a pay cut....cap space..

If Jim Harbaugh was not a football coach he would be a politician. And that is not a compliment.

Daniels > McCoy.

Why keep around a so-so QB that's injury prone over an up and coming guy who is more in the mold of the QB you're running with anyway? At least if you keep Daniels as the #2 QB, if something were to happen to Kap, you'd still have most of the offense available to you.

It is just wrong if Colt McCoy does not end up as a back up in Indianapolis someday.

August 31, 2013  12:59 PM ET

Really, Seneca? It's almost like the NFL is a cutthroat business.

August 31, 2013  01:00 PM ET

Seneca has had a plethora of opportunities to showcase - he hasn't. These new "big mouth" moments players are embracing are not going to work in their favor.

Just the NFL being the NFL!

Much like Barkevious coming back to be able to play in the dog pound in Cleveland.
