09:05 AM ET 09.01 | If there were two disappointing elements to Thursday evening's game, suggested one general manager who watched the college opener on television, it was that North Carolina directed so few plays at the South Carolina while the initial reviews for South Carolina defensive end and Heisman Trophy candidate Jadeveon Clowney were decidedly mixed following the Gamecocks' opening victory over North Carolina on Thursday night, NFL scouts figure to keep avidly scrambling to games to assess first-hand the player that many feel will be the first guy off the board in the '14 draft. If there were two disappointing elements to Thursday evening's game, suggested one general manager who watched the college opener on television, it was that North Carolina directed so few plays at the South Carolina star, and that Clowney was obviously in less than optimum condition. The GM noted early Friday morning to NFP that he wants to check on how serious was the stomach virus that Clowney allegedly battled during the week, as late as Wednesday. In fact, the GM, who reminded that he can't discuss underclass players for attribution, planned to phone South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier, whose postgame remarks indicated that he wasn't overly pleased with Clowney's shape. "Was it that (illness) or was he just out of shape" the general manager queried rhetorically. "I mean, he chased some plays at times, but even on TV, you could see he was (winded) too much. Maybe it was the North Carolina (fast-paced) offense at times. It's early, and we'll see (Clowney) a lot of times before it's all said and done, but it's never too early to start asking questions about a guy. I want to know what was going on."

Maybe baby.

They've hyped this guy like he's superman so they feel compelled to search for excuses why he doesn't live up to it.

Steve Spurrier not "pleased" about something. Imagine that.

We shall see next weekend if Clowney is out of shape. South Carolina has a tough game with Georgia!!! The Bulldogs can't afford to go 0-2 this season!!

He may be out of shape but he'll never be out of hype. SI gonna' ride this train 'till there's no more steam.

Scary to consider but is Clowney stays in good shape we're probably looking at a future Hall of Fame DE. If he doesn't, he's probably JPP, 16 sacks one year, 6 the next, wicked inconsistent and infuriating.

"Heisman Trophy Candidate" get's thrown out there pretty as if it is a foregone conclusion. I guess any player in the game at this point is technically a candidate, Last year at this point in the season, USC had the top "Heisman Candidate." Now where was he during the awards banquet? I still have my doubts that Clowney will be invited. Perhaps he is taking it easy and trying not to get hurt, and since the award is suppose to be based on this years performance, this will eliminate him. So can we stop calling him a Heisman Candidate and go back to calling him, the projected first round draft dude?

I thought Mett and his receivers looked real good last night.

Uh-oh! The bayou aggies may have an offense for a change and that could be a bit of a problem for the rest of the league IMHO.

This ^^^

I can't recall one player getting so much build-up from one CFB highlight as Clowney.

One off game and all of a sudden, the guy sucks? Jesus, people are stupid.

September 1, 2013  02:29 PM ET

Clowney was beasted by James Hurst. Hurst is a decent LT and was even selected to the All ACC team this season, but a guy with as much hype as Clowney should've been able to get past him at least a few times.

I was pretty disappointed, honestly, at how little of an impact Clowney made against UNC.

Heisman? First overall pick?

Not playing like that.

You obviously didn't watch.

Clowney made NO impact. It was weird, actually, at how invisible he was against a less than stellar opponent.
