Kevin Sumlin chastises Johnny Manziel

11:31 AM ET 09.01 | Johnny Football didn't start, and he didn't finish. Manziel sat out the first half as part of the NCAA's attempt to save face with the silliest penalty since he last stood in a corner. When he finally got into the game in the second half, he was all over the place. Or as Manziel's coach, Kevin Sumlin, summed up his quarterback's half-day of work: "Missed a read, couple touchdown drives, couple scrambles, and a foolish penalty at the end." On one hand, it might seem telling that Sumlin broached the subject of an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty against Manziel before he was even asked. He'd already made his feelings public, at that. As Manziel came off the field after getting into a little trash talk with Rice's Malcolm Hill of Frisco Liberty, earning a flag for his efforts, ESPN's sideline reporter, Mark Schwarz, heard Sumlin tell Manziel, "That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard." Considering how Sumlin ranked the comment, then, I'm sorry to report we never found out exactly what Manziel said. Sumlin wasn't saying, Manziel wasn't talking, and Hill wasn't available. Whether Sumlin's anger was directed at what Manziel said, or the fact that he said it in the face of an official, I couldn't say. But he wasn't happy. And that was before Sumlin found out after the game that Manziel, reacting to another Rice player earlier, appeared to mime signing an autograph. Sumlin didn't see the irony. "No matter what the comments are, he's going to face that every week, with people chirpin'," he said. "That's not OK. I obviously addressed that on the sideline immediately after the play. "That's something he's going to have to deal with every week."

Easy to bench Manziel with a comfortable lead. Lets see what happens if JF acts up in a close game.

Don't worry coach.. Manziel will be out of your hair after this year.. then A&M can go back to being an average team

Not so sure about that. They have another top-notch QB waiting in the wings.

Sumlin will be in the NFL next year, then he won't have to put up with these immature spoiled kids.

As I told a couple of Frog fans last night... Gotta tip the cap to LSU. That was impressive.

Mr. Football is a young man in his teens. Some of us grow up socially faster than others (and some don't grow up that way at all!).

I am willing to cut Manziel a little flack until he learns better how to handle fame and noteriety--provided that he does eventually learn it.

And - as far as young Mr. Manziel is concerned... that bag of stuff your parents should have taught you includes class and humility. Something to keep in mind down the road.

At this point notoriety is in the lead.

Average? They were bottom tier Big-12 for like the past 20 years. Now that they switched to an easy conference they're in the headlines daily. Iowa St. and Texas Tech should take a lesson from ATM and switch over to the easy division of the south eastern conference.

They didn't switch to the Pac 14. Did you see one of your ranked Pac 12 teams lose to a Div 2 team?

So your QB is the biggest **** bag in all of CFB. Had to suspend 4 players (3 of them being starters). Sounds like Sumlin is having a tough time disciplining the troops.
