07:15 AM ET 09.03 | Gary Payton still has a Hall of Fame speech to finish, and, in the run-up to his induction, the point guard called John Stockton the "hardest person I ever had to guard." [Q:] Even so, you once said you were better than Stockton? A: "I was. I really think I was better as an athlete and in everything all-around. But he was just a smarter basketball player than us. He just got it done. I do think I was a better basketball player." ... Q: You say Stockton was the hardest to guard, but what about guarding Michael Jordan? A: "Those battles were a little easier. I would have Jordan get mad at me and go back at me. He knew he was really talented and could do whatever he wanted to. But [Stockton] was more of a challenge to me than guarding someone that would talk back to me."

Jordan prevented u from winning a ring in the 90s so what are you talking about?
You didn't get that honor until you were on Wade's jock in 2006...
I respect Payton but he needs to dumb it down!

He's not saying Stockton is better than MJ. He's saying that, to HIM, he was harder to guard. Big deal.

Agreed. Stockton didn't talk back, he just got the job done. Mentally that was harder to deal with than someone who spars with you.

That's like him saying that Shaq was the easiest to guard because he didn't guard him! C'mon GP, you're a defensive player for a reason! You make it sound like guarding SGs such as Jordan and Kobe are easy to guard!

Gary Payton: not the sharpest knife in the drawer. Jordan was bigger, faster, stronger, and more athletic. End of story.

Someone who gets 15 assits against you, yes that would hard to say you 'stopped' him.

September 3, 2013  09:50 AM ET

Last time he bad mouthed his Airness he got lit up on national television in a playoff game. Dude should just shut up. He was lucky to get a ring with Wade and Shaq and he almost blew that for them also..

I think Payton just needs some attention....I mean seriously MJ was unguardable....too fast...too strong....too tough....too smart....and above all too competitive and mean

All you people on here saying Payton is wrong or lying... how would you know?

None of us played ball. Payton did. And he said Stockton was harder to guard.

Very presumptuous to assume you know better than Payton, especially when the topic is "who did GARY PAYTON think was the hardest player to guard".

I wouldnt think he guarded mj that much

He really didn't.

But as I recall, the few times he did guard Jordan, MJ torched him.

The bottom line is that Payton wasn't very effective against either one.....so it really doesn't matter one way of the other who was 'harder' to defend....
