Did Texas snub Longhorns fan Jameis Winston?

07:29 AM ET 09.04 | The reported quote wound up gaining up almost as much attention as Jameis Winston himself: "If I'd gotten offer from Texas I'd be going to Texas right now." On Tuesday morning, a UT source contacted me to point out that Texas did contact Winston's coach, but didn't think the quarterback/baseball star was seriously interested in playing for the Longhorns. ... About an hour after I heard from the Texas source, I spoke to Matt Scott, who was Winston's head coach in high school. He told me he called the UT football staff "four or five" times, and one time even spoke to a woman at UT after he tried the main line to the Longhorns football office. "I said, 'I know you get this call every single day. But lemme tell you, I've got a guy some think is the No. 1 quarterback in the nation. Let me help you." ... But Winston nor Scott ever heard from Texas.

Mack would have turned him into a DB or WR.

As much as I think Texas is run by a bunch of fools, this necessity to say this guy or that guy would have accepted an invitaion to play at Texas if they had only asked seems kind of stupid to even discuss. Who cares? He's where he is and that's that.

More critically, how did JW slip through Saban's dragnet? Winston's an Alabama product. He should've been a 'Bama lock.

Yeah we really missed on Trevor Knight.

I agree, it wouldn't hurt if Texas had a good QB recruiter, but IMO the big problem is keeping them after they are recruited and signed!!! The Longhorns have let quite a few QBs transfer in the past.

One good game, beginner's luck, does not make this guy the second coming. Let's see how he does against a real defense.

Jameis wasa big fan of Prutt's I believe, became rea friendly with him. When Pruitt went to FSU, pretty much everyone said the writing is on the wall. Wasn't much we could do at the time.

Plus, as you can see. Jameis had a chance t play as a freshman at FSU. No way he was beating out A.J. inhis first year at Bama. Plus, Alabama's baseball team is not all that great right now.

"let" transfer?

They were 3rd-4th stringers that would never see the field in Austin. Glad they found places to play and finish their dream of playing college ball.

That wont happen until the end of the year when they play UF...So he might have the Heisman locked up by then

Purifoy, Roberson, Watkins, Poole, and VHIII will get everyone to vote someone else.

And, quite frankly, he has a little better situation at FSU with regards to O line and receivers.

September 4, 2013  10:56 AM ET

Not really all that big of a story, there are likely plenty of players who can say "I'd love to have been recruited by X School" but for any of a number of reasons it didn't happen -- and the coach himself says he told them he knew they get this same call every single day.

And I agree with Danica, the guy had ONE excellent game, against Pitt, so let's hold off a little on the worship.

Not to mention a more QB-friendly offensive mindset.

Hey, we change offensive philosophies every year. What's not to like?
