Clemens' House autographs illegal

Any members of the House oversight committee or their staff who asked Roger Clemens for an autograph during his tour of the Capitol over the past week might have violated a federal law against soliciting things of value from people with interests before the committee, several lawyers with expertise in Congressional ethics laws said. In addition, if a staff member or a member of the committee had Clemens autograph a baseball, that would apparently violate a House ethics ban against taking a gift valued at more than $50, the lawyers said. A Congressional ethics expert, Jan Witold Baran, a partner in the law firm of Wiley Rein & Fielding in Washington, said, "It would be like O. J. Simpson giving an autographed football to Judge Ito."

Clemens signing autographs AND perhaps just giving them away....

Hey, here's my autographed picture and please vote for me.

Clemens is above the law.

We need to call Batman !!

These are the exact thoughts I had and shared in a recent blog post - http://www.fannation.com/blogs/post/150295
I've been waiting for this story and was glad to read it in the NY Times this morning. By the way check the comments from my post. There is one person who thinks I'm a "joke" and seemingly doesn't agree. I did not know Clemens and Rusty Hardin were on fannation...

Oh for the love of pete... You would have that someone would have thought better before asking for his autograph.

February 13, 2008  08:19 AM ET

R u kidding me. Clemens autograph is worth less then a truck load of dead rats at a diaper factory.

I have to say I didn't like this tactic by the Clemens' team and now I see why my gut said something was wrong with this. Censure woud be a nice move for all who received the "gifts" fromTeam Clemens and then they should be required to provide proof they returned these "gifts". It was very unsettling to be nice that these politcos could be such fawning "fans" with someone who was to appear before a congressional committe in the not so distant future and as the centerpeice of why the committe was to meet.
Team Clemens has used every resoeuce avaialble to mount their public campaign to sway public opinion and not so public opinion. I have another gut feeling that Team Clemens is also performing overkill on their methodolgy to prove Clemens' "innocenece' in the present regard before us all. I have no idea if it wil work but he certianly has gone above and beyond what I perceive as rational for an innocent man to perform in his defense. And I will be relieved when he, AND all the other participants, finally have their say before the committee. Then we will have all the cards on the table in so far as their sworn word is concerned. and, then the game will be afoot as the truth is seperated from the lies because if it goes according to the script that is being presented so far then either McNamee is a cold stone liar or Clemens is a cold stone liar. So whats it gonna be kiddies?

It's somewhat off topic, but why does Clemens look like he's on his way to a Tae Kwon Do competition in the picture above?

Sweep the leg, Rocket! Sweep the leg!

I wonder if he will autograph a hypodermic needle for me so I can sell it on eBay?

okay but by the time this crap is over Rogers autograph wont even be worth $50

February 13, 2008  09:15 AM ET

Clemens vs. McNamee vs. MLB...Someone is going to come out of this looking real stupid... Clemens because he thought he could beat Congress and lie when all he had to do was fess up, get a little slap on the wrist, say he used it for "healing" purposes, fade into obscurity a millionaire, and be done with it...McNamee because he ratted out his "pal" to make stuff up so he wouldn't go to jail, when in the end if he's lying he'll go to jail anyway...MLB because of the stupid Mitchell report and 10 million bones wasted on "research" to get a useless info from a liar, that's if he's found to be lying...Oh and whatever happened to Bonds? He must be happy to be somewhat out of the limelight during all of this.

Once congress gets involve its over Roger the Dodger Steroid Clemens.
OJ gave Judge Ito an invite to his private party after the trail.

February 13, 2008  09:27 AM ET

It may not matter. If he is found guilty, and I have my doubt, his autograph won't meet the $50 cap. LOL.

Clemens just keeps digging that hole deeper and deeper that he is going to have to crawl into when this is over.. Even if they can't prove if he took roids or not, he has tarnished his reputation by his actions!! Clemens just give it up!!

February 13, 2008  10:11 AM ET

Heck, there shouldn't even be any hearings, the whole point of the matter is not what individuals did or did not use, or for that matter did or did not lie about whether they did or did not use, it is about cleaning up the abuse of peds by MLB players and the act of condoning the use by club, league and uninion officials and employees. The more the focus is on Clemens the less the focus is on the important issue. Getting Clemens, while perhaps a worthy cause, will not "prove" that MLB is going after peds, it indicates that noone is at the helm and that there is no ongoing effort to clean up MLB.

"People always want to know why this matters so much, to Congress or the federal government. It is because big-time sports matters in this country, that's why. Because sports isn't just big business in this country, it is huge business. Because sports is given anti-trust exemptions that other huge businesses would kill for. Because sports fans constantly help finance all this, up to and including building the stadiums around stars exactly like Clemens.

All fans ask in return is that the game be on the level."

Mike Lupica in today's Daily news.

I used to love Baseball, couldn't wait to get into all the box scores and stats and the game of the And the aftermath of the strike was MLB going Walmart on us with all the expansion teams and of course the natural dilution of talent.Baseball these days is a second rate sport,or "bush league".No salary cap means only a handful of teams have a chance at a championship and players jump from team to team like Liz Taylor into a wedding chapel. If it were up to me I would simply put an asterick on everything after the 1993 season,it is all tainted, and sadly, irrelevant.
