Pats' Kelly: Manuel is no Michael Vick

07:03 AM ET 09.06 | Whether it's EJ Manuel or Jeff Tuel on the other side Sunday, the Patriots will have to prepare for a rookie quarterback who can run. Just don't count Tommy Kelly among those viewing Manuel as the next Michael Vick. "He runs a little bit, but he tries to stay in that pocket and get that ball out," said Kelly, listed on the Patriots' depth chart as a starting defensive tackle. "He'll run when necessary, but to say he's like Michael Vick? No. But he'll run, he's definitely a threat, though." Manuel was the team's first-round draft pick out of Florida State; Tuel is an undrafted rookie from Washington State. Tuel got more playing time during the preseason while Manuel has dealt with a knee injury -- Kevin Kolb has been placed on injured reserve -- but the Bills have named Manuel as the starter.

No matter how you slice it nobody should be envious of their qb situation.

Does much of the urban population think he's the best quarterback in the league? If no, then he's no Michael Vick - yet.

Just my opinion, but EJ Manuel will play very well in the NFL for a long time. Would not surprise me to see him be the ROY in the AFC. Marrone was a great hire. He will make the Bills a pretty good team in a short time.

EJ has been injured...looks like Vick to me

ooohhh Nice!!!

Exactly, he run when "necessary". That is unlike Vick in a good way.

The headline inaccurately miscasts Kelly's comments as a dis. But I can't the interns this time, the headline is lifted directly from the Boston Globe. And Kelly gets a lesson on talking to the Boston press.

I was thinking the same thing as I was reading your post; confusing and inaccurate headline.
And the reporters wonder why players don't want to talk to them?

I really hope this kid doesn't get ruined by getting thrown out there this early. I like his game.

He's got a nice early test on Sunday!

September 6, 2013  09:53 AM ET

Oh I don't know about that. Other than Manuel being 4 inches taller, 22 pounds heavier, the fact that they don't have similar leadership skills, one doesn't run as much as the other, one keeps hitting the big foam finger guy in the stands, one's a rookie while one's a veteran that plays like a rookie, they're nearly identical.

I don't think Manuel ever suggested he has the running skills of Michael Vick, because he has an issue with his knee, the Bills should start Tuel.

I hope, for the sake of their franchise, that Manuel doesn't get reinjured this Sunday.

He's also no Abe Vigoda.

Good news for Manuel.

I thought NE-Buff would be the blowout of the week. Not sure after last night's fiasco in Denver.

I'd take Manuel over the FSU QB my Vikes have right now.

You're right. Sit the guy if there's any hint that the injury lingers. Start the UDFA (who, I might add, is not that bad)

How about them Jaguars?
