08:50 AM ET 09.07 | The Chargers have cleared more than $3.3 million in 2013 cap space by reworking Philip Rivers' contract. The move was done to sign a player, a source with knowledge of the deal said Friday. Rivers was due to earn $12 million in base salary this season. The restructure adds no new money to the quarterback's contract that runs through 2015, simply transferring $5 million of that $12 million into signing bonus. The bonus becomes prorated over the life of the three remaining years, hence the approximate $3.3 in new space. This effort could be an indication the team is positioning itself to re-sign linebacker Donald Butler to a contract extension.

Sign a player? Cutting edge journalism here folks.

Every team close to the cap does this every year. $3 million is the minimum needed open to cover your azzz to sign guys when injuries hit and maintain a practice squad. It is NOT about extending contracts.

I don't see a lot of news on this. If they were looking to sign someone, they would have done this just prior to free agency.

It is insurance money for replacement signings during the year for guys that go on IR. Period.

And maybe makes it easier to dump Philip if he continues his downward spiral.

Quite right. Once Jacksonville moves to LA, the offers will dry up for SD. Start saving nickels and dimes now, Chargers.
