Much-needed Gronk out Thursday

07:00 AM ET 09.10 | The quick turnaround into Week 2 for the Patriots isn't much helping New England tight end Rob Gronkowski. While [Gronkowski] is inching closer to playing, a source [Monday] said it was still "unlikely" that he would be ready to go in Thursday night's game against the New York Jets. That being said, he has not been completely ruled out at this stage. He's still in the wait-and-see category, although, the chances still aren't great for him to play. At this time last week, it was a given. The Patriots knew he wasn't going to play against the Bills. This week, there's an outside shot, albeit slim. At least, it's a slight upgrade. Gronk will have a better shot next week against Tampa Bay. The Patriots, of course, could really use Gronkowski's presence in the offense.

They should be fine without him this week and next.

That's what I thought about the Buffalo game.

The Pats looked very un-ready on Sunday. Maybe it's because training camp has been sissified thanks to the new CBA, and nobody takes pre-season games seriously because nobody wants to get hurt, but Sunday looked more like a fifth week of pre-season for a lot of teams.

You're right, and even some of the coaches interviewed said the same thing: lack of practice time has hurt preparation. Only the workaholics like Peyton Manning looked sharp.

I didn't really see any team that was ready for the first game.

And if they can't beat the Jets and Tampa at home no matter who is on the field the next 2 weeks then we shouldn't expect any post season success.

They lost their leading rusher and receiver out of the backfield Shane Vereen with a broken wrist for a couple of weeks.

Great..now he can tap dance on the sidelines.

I'd love to see Gronk turn this into a payday... "Well, Hoodie, I might be able to get going a little quicker if you gave me the $40 mil you gave to Shooter."

He was signed to a 6yrs/$53M contract extension last year.

If Amendola doesn't play Thursday Gronk will be needed even more ......

But it wouldn't surprise me if he still didn't play.

September 10, 2013  01:09 PM ET

BB isn't stupid enough to use him prematurely, only Shanahan does that.

Shane Vereen has a broken wrist. Time for Ridley to get out of the doghouse.

September 10, 2013  07:15 PM ET

Since the Pats are going to win the division anyway, why not keep Gronk on the bench as long as possible?

I know, Bish, I was saying on top of that... Putting the strong arm to the hooded one...

Mostly I wanted a way to fit in "Shooter".

Give Tebow one more chance and see if he is interested in being FB or a TE.

He has already stated he's a QB and only a QB, and he will only play in the NFL.
