Manziel is Saban's kind of player?

07:16 AM ET 09.10 | On the surface, Johnny Manziel doesn't much seem like Nick Saban's kind of player. Too anti-establishment. Too cocky and mouthy. Too much of an unpredictable free spirit for the most detailed and disciplined coach in the sport. A wrench in the process waiting to happen. ... I can't remember hearing Saban use the phrase "fierce competitor" about an opposing player with as much conviction as he did in tossing that compliment at Manziel. ... "I have not seen him get rattled in a game," Saban said. "I really haven't. And I think the guy's a great competitor and regardless of any other circumstance that goes on around him, when he's playing on the field he's doing everything he can to try to make his team win and trying to make every choice and decision to do it and he is a fierce competitor."

Then why didn't Saban recruit him?

I'd guess it's his size and style of play. He is pretty slight for QB in that conference. Also, he's an immature, spoiled son of a Texas oil guy and history has shown that they are awful leaders and poor decision makers.

"...history has shown that they are awful leaders and poor decision makers." Just like that other QB who is immature and the son of a Texas oil guy? Let's see. Who would that be? Truth is, there isn't another J Football. He's one of a kind. But as far as being an aweful leader and poor decision maker, his coach, teammates and 300,000 Aggies disagree.

Would that be the same coach that benched him for bad judgement and being a spoiled idiot? Thought so.

Coach Saban's qualifying phrase is "...on the field..."

Terrific coach-speak, BTW. No bulletin board material for aTM. Too bad.

Cause we had Philip Ely instead!!!

September 10, 2013  09:34 AM ET

He set offensive records in the SEC last year. Never mind he was a RS freshman, and never mind he set those records against those much talked-about SEC defenses. No no no Saban wouldn't like him at all.

September 10, 2013  09:34 AM ET

Saban would love him.

Because spread, hurry up offenses are the devil.

September 10, 2013  09:43 AM ET

Does Saban mean he likes an arrogant, cheating, lying, beer guzzling over the top personality that likes the spotlight on him all the time?

September 10, 2013  09:46 AM ET

Zing! Well-played, Sir!
