Pirates to use Gerrit Cole from bullpen in postseason

03:53 PM ET 09.10 | For the first time in a long, long time, the Pittsburgh Pirates and their fans are going to be able to experience the postseason. As a Chicago Cubs fan whose team is sitting dead last in the division, it's kind of exciting to see a new team from this division finally in the race for the National League Pennant. This is a team who had started off looking like a team who would reach the playoffs, but lost steam during the last couple months of the season. Travis Sawchik posted on Twitter that Pittsburgh Pirates skipper Clint Hurdle indicated that Gerrit Cole will more than likely pitch out of the bullpen during the postseason. The starting right-handed rookie is just one of a group of amazing National League rookies this season. Cole has posted a 3.48 ERA, 1.16 whip and a 75/21 K/BB ratio over his 98 1/2 innings pitched this season. Pretty smart to throw one of your starting pitchers who can last five to seven innings during a start, out of the bullpen in a reliever role.

Liriano will be their starter in a one game playoff and if they advance Cole would the odd man out unless an injury occurs.

The Pirates have said for a while now this would happen if they make the playoffs.....

Makes no sense. Hes their 2nd best pitcher this season, behind liriano. Oh well. They can just wait till next year to let him start a postseason game....

It's his first year in the Majors so it makes sense not to overwork him this year.

The Pirates said yesterday that Cole will be fully available in the postseason for whatever is needed. Start or come out of the bullpen!
