Falcons lack drive to win it all

07:02 AM ET 09.11 | During a short span in Week 1, the Falcons' offense hummed, pinning the Saints back and quieting their home crowd -- then it hit neutral. [Said wide receiver Roddy White:] "With all the guys that we have, we should be able to score a lot more points than that." Of course, White was speaking only of Sunday's opening game loss. But he could have been addressing a (fatal?) flaw that's been almost as much a component of the Atlanta offense in recent seasons as has been the ability of general manager Thomas Dimitroff and coach Mike Smith to collect impressive individual talent. ... The nettlesome offensive malaise has become a trend that, late Sunday evening, after the team had returned to Atlanta, one player termed "maddening" and then "frustrating."

And they have every since the Dirty Bird dance days... It's a fact.

0-1. Yep, it's all over. Pack it in.

Their recent playoff record sort of indicates their lack of that killer instinct. They need to ask Aaron Hernandez for some pointers on that.

This team, like the Dallas Cowboys, would have a marked difference in their defense had they gone out and signed someone like Dawkins or Ray Lewis when they were FA's a couple years ago. It isn't about the skill level so much as the attitude they brought to the field. I would have paid Lewis double what the Ravens paid him, to have him on the field and in the locker room on gameday. When you have a team full of youngsters and vets that have never been to a championship there is just something about having an experience player around to pass that on.

The author of this piece lacks the drive to make a salient point. In reading the first sentence it sounds like the Falcons overcame a 23-17 deficit to win.

And just what does this lame, pencil pushing, no account, intern know about drive anyway?

It's one freaking game bozo, one game. 16 teams lost their first game. Do they all lack the drive to win it all????

it really comes down to the fact that Sean owns Atlanta, they stand on the sideline and expect things to go wrong. it's not a questions of if, it's when. they'll beat everyone else at least during the regular season

Yeah, thanks. I do feel better now after having said that.

He should be playing again soon - he plead not guilty after all.

it's too early in the season to count the Falcons out. You don't do that until the playoffs.

September 11, 2013  09:46 AM ET

And sometimes the other team just plays a little bit better than you do.

Not so much that they are 0-1, it is that they are 0-1 in their division.

IF they were in the AFC North they would be tied for 1st place.

I think a better summation of week one would be " Both Ryan Bros get lucky " or " When was the last time 4 safeties were scored on the opening week " ?

It was a good football game against a good team. Those are probably the best looking teams in the NFC east of Seattle.
