Scherzer's poor starts open AL Cy Young race

07:14 AM ET 09.11 | Going back only a few weeks, Detroit's Max Scherzer, when he outdueled Matt Harvey, appeared to have the AL Cy Young race locked up with his 19-1 record. But Scherzer has pitched poorly in two of his last three starts, creating new fuel for the ABM (Anybody But Max) crowd. ... [It's] close between Scherzer and the Rangers' Yu Darvish, with the White Sox's Chris Sale not far behind. (I'm less enamored of the Mariners' Felix Hernandez, who is in the middle of what likely will be a two-week break due to stiffness in his side and lower back, and the Tigers' Anibal Sanchez, who missed almost three weeks with a strained right shoulder.) Scherzer still ranks first in opponents' OPS (Darvish is second) and ahead of Darvish in Fielding Independent Pitching (FIP).

It's still Scherzer's to lose.

Geez. Incredible how media create so much crap around nobodies. Why is this dude even relevant?? A dumb **** college kid who won an award last year. You'd think he was Elvis. I don't blame him though for all the media hype. Typical build them up and rip em down syndrome.

[It's] close between Scherzer and the Rangers' Yu Darvish...

Yu isn't exactly making a strong case for himself - Monday night notwithstanding.

I always hoped the Felix Hernandez award was just a blip on the screen. some writers being too cute pretending to know and understand things mere mortals could not comprehend.

wins d not matter I guess and you ca find enough sabermetric statistics to make any fact overcome truth. If Scherzer does not win it, then just change the name to the Keith Woolner/bill James award.

It appears you don't think Felix was a deserving winner. And you would be wrong.

The 2010 Mariners were pathetic and didn't score runs. Felix couldn't control that, interleague games are the only place he could help his team score runs.

He could control runs scored against him, and he did.
Evidence: Led the league in ERA and IP.

Best thing I could think to say too. If Darvish had come through with one of those no-hit games, might be a closer race.

Case for Scherzer for Cy young award was closed in august. He would have to have a total melt down to lose it. Fos sports trying to make a story out of no story.
