Fernando Velasco to start for Steelers

04:44 PM ET 09.13 | The Pittsburgh Steelers will have a new starting center for Monday night's game vs the Cincinnati Bengals, but it won't be the man who stepped in for Maurkice Pouncey. Once the Pro Bowler went down in the first quarter of Sunday's opener, Kelvin Beachum proceeded to come in and get dominated by the Tennessee Titans' defensive line, and the Steeler offense was held to one of its lowest outputs in the Ben Roethlisberger-era. That was enough to make the team go with another option in just one week, as newly-signed Fernando Velasco will be getting the starting nod Monday night. Velasco faced the Bengals once this preseason while playing (ironically) for the Titans, and didn't fare well in that game while going against a Bengals d-line that was without most of its best pass-rushers.

Everybody who knows football knows center is the most underrated position in football. No glory, but probably as vital as catcher is in baseball. I could be a smart-alec and wax poetic about how Big Ben needs "protection", but considering he sheds sacks better than anyone I've ever seen aand still gets pounded, and how horrible his line has been the last few years, the sooner he has someone who's at least competent under center, the better the chance he can walk without a cane when he's 50.

If the Steelers don't get that position solved right away it's going to be a long season.

It's STILL going to be a long season.......................and I'm a (realistic) Steelers fan.

Focus on the positives. The D is better this year and will get even better when Cortez Allen returns and J Jones is full time starter. Miller will be back, Bell will get his shot soon and Haley will be told by Ben to put Moye in the game on 3rd downs.

they should have never let Legursky go, he was one of the best all purpose linemen on the team..

Before the Titan game I predicted a 6 and 10 season. That may have been a little optimistic.

It's a good time to be an offensive lineman sitting in the couch right now...

Lots of opportunities out there.

I bet Brian Bosworth, Ryan Leaf, and even Timmy T. wish they had the skills to play on the O line. One is too old, one is too hopped up on goofballs, and one is holding out for an NFL QB position.

Those three would make a great wacky "trio" sitcom of three ex-players living together as room mates, learning that everyone is different, yet special in their own way, and coping with their own delusions about their football "careers".

The "really special episode" will be when Timmy loses his virginity to a Jamaican "lady of ill repute" and doesn't use protection.

He could do almost anything, but he couldn't do anything really well. He had a couple of botches snaps here and there, and when Pouncey wasn't able to go for the SB against Green Bay, I knew that was gonna be a tough game. Any time Legursky was in there it was a tough game.
