Will Yankees GM play bad guy with Derek Jeter?

09:20 AM ET 09.15 | Brian Cashman has been willing to play the role of the bad guy in the past when dealing with aging star players, essentially telling Bernie Williams and Jorge Posada they were done as Yankees. So it will be intriguing, to say the least, to see how he handles the Derek Jeter situation. The trickiest part is that the Yankee GM may have to make a tough call before Jeter gets the chance to show whether he can still play shortstop in spring training next year. That's the consensus opinion of six baseball people -- three scouts, three executives -- I polled this week, anyway. They all say the Yankees need to acquire an everyday shortstop for next season, as they are convinced Jeter won't be able to play the position adequately, while Eduardo Nunez is too erratic defensively, and recent pick-up Brendan Ryan can't hit. "Cash is in a tough spot," said one executive. "Jeter won't like it if they bring in a shortstop, but they have to do it. Even if Jeter works all winter to strengthen that ankle, he was moving so poorly when he was out there that it's bound to limit him in some ways. "So he'll be a 40-year old shortstop who already had limited range. He may be able to help them with the bat, but not enough to justify playing short every day. If you're the GM, it's your responsibility to make the tough decision for the good of the ballclub."

He should, it is his job to do what is best for the team.

Jeter takes a $7 million pay cut to pick up his option. Pettit, Kuroda, Hughes and Youkalis take another $40 million off the books. Arod gives back between $12 and $25 million next year. Cano and Granderson-who knows? Cashman has chips to play and can still get under that luxury tax number. So do it.

How is it being a "bad guy" to pick up a shortstop when Jeter couldn't stay healthy this season, had limited defensive range even before the injury and is near the end of his career in any case? They would be foolish not to go after a shortstop.

I for one would love to see Jeter back at short next season. With Alex to his right and whoever they get to replace Cano at 2B.

How is Arod giving them back all that money? I doubt Jeter will take a pay cut. Cano is going to cost them close to 30 per and getting rid of their only decent starter (Kuroda) would be foolish.

suspension money from Arod. does not get it and it does not count against a teams salary total. half year to a year suspension. Cano does not cost $30 million because he is getting $15 million now, sooo, $30 million is an increase of $15 million to him on the team total.

Kuroda, if resigned, doubtful, is a $10 million dollar man. Nova is their best pitcher.

Jeter has no choice, it is a players option for $8 million with a $3 million buy out if he does not take it. That is a $7 million cut from what he gets this year.

Pettit, Hughes and Youkalis total close to $30 million. They be gone. without a doubt.

I think it will be Jeter who will be the bad guy by insisting the job is his and insisting on being paid as if he's any good.

Agree, but the money is not in his control That $8 million option is what it is. He is selfish in my opinion. He thinks he can still play, but he is a statue on defense and a singles hitter with no speed on offense. Great in his day, but those days are over.

Hmmmm....Currently, Kuroda throws more innings, wins more games and has a better ERA and WHIP.

Nova's best quality is his youth.

he has not been good at all lately. zero for September. He is getting older. Not sure he even wants to play anymore, nearing that 40 year old mark. Look for an offer to guys like Garza in FA.

"Jeter won't like it if they bring in another shortstop"?Too bad.Yankees need strong play at that position and the 40 year old Geter is not capable.End of story.

Too bad is right. Cashman will man up on this one. the article makes you think Jeter is ticked at the last contract when Cashman told him if he did not like it to get a better one from somebody else. Well, that is a two way street, Cashman is a little ticked he was pushed into giving him $50 million over three years last time.

Yup. Time to move on.

The $25 million due Arod, if suspended all year can be front loaded to Cano for next year, no additional money between them. cano gets $40 million next year, then $30 million then less each year after that.

ah well, this is what winter is for. game time. you people enjoy.

It's no longer bad guy it one realistic, to talk Derek on to the Bench and into The Hall of Fame!!!

Based on the attitude he had in negotiating his recent contract, Jeter isn't likely to give an inch on next season.
Too bad, he'll be muddying his legacy as one of the all time Yankee icons.

Attitude? What are you talking about? You spew an awful lot of nonsense on these threads.
