07:18 AM ET 09.20 | Lou Piniella had just come off an industry-shaking run to the ALCS, knocking off the Yankees in the process, and, with a cast that included Ken Griffey Jr., Randy Johnson and Alex Rodriguez, managed to turn the momentum into a new stadium. Just think how higher [Piniella] could have climbed had one more item, a seemingly small one at the time, gone right. "The general manager, Woody Woodward, called," Piniella said in a recent interview. "He said he was working on a deal with the Yankees. He mentioned a few prospects, including Mariano [Rivera]. It never materialized." ... [What if the '96 Yankees], had pulled the trigger and dealt Rivera, at the time a 26-year-old late bloomer with a live arm, to the Mariners for stopgap shortstop Felix Fermin?

Trades that weren't: Johnny Bench for Keith Hernandez when he was with the Cardinals.

What if I had not wasted the last 15 seconds of my life reading a 20 year old 'what if'?

you wasted more than 15 seconds complaining about the 15 seconds that you chose to waste reading said 'what if' despite a headline which warned you of the content.

Yeah, and Babe Ruth almost had a sex change and became Kate Smith. GMs are talking about dumb trades 24/7.

Easy - Mo doesn't make the HOF.

His legacy is much different if not playing for a perrenial WS contender and getting all of those chances to shine in the post season. He played with Posada, Jeter, Williams, Pettitte, O'Neill, Martinez .... lots of other outstanding players. Seattle never would have provided him with such an opportunity.

And here you have an example of falling into luck despite your best intentions.
