07:22 AM ET 09.20 | The Wolverines-Spartans rivalry has taken flight. The University of Michigan athletic department paid between $3,000 and $5,000 for skywritten Wolverines slogans on Friday and Saturday, one of which appeared over the Michigan State University campus shortly before a football game. Dave Ablauf, spokesperson for the U-M athletic department, said the skywriting costs about $100 per "piece," and his department paid for "somewhere between 30 and 50 pieces" over the two-day weekend. But the specific "Go Blue" message Michigan paid for that appeared over East Lansing cost less than $100, Ablauf added. U-M hired Tucson-based Oregon Aero SkyDancer skywriting for the job. A plane spelled out various Michigan mottos throughout southeast Michigan on Friday and Saturday, which Ablauf said his department outlined.

How long did it take them to figure this out?

September 20, 2013  08:14 AM ET

I wish Michigan could spell out a better Offensive and Defensive line. One thing they can spell is turnover.

what a bush league move. At least Sparty has/had some class, and used this stunt to raise money to help fight ovarian cancer.

Your a moron jerk. It was for raising money for cancer. If you can read go the DETROIT FREE PRESS and read the story.

The skywriting should have read "Michigan. HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA HA HA HA HA HA HA"

Ok, here we go....*You're...*moron,.....cancer *research.....*read, .....*to

As shown above, you are the moron and a jerk. And who raises money for cancer? Further, it was Michigan State who took this lame stunt and turned it into a fund raiser to help fund ovarian cancer research. Apparently, it is you who cannot read....or, maybe more accurately, not comprehend what it is you are reading.

Hopefully, you can get your GED from that hocus-pocus AA high school, otherwise known as tsun.

Skywriting cost more than $100 a pop; $100 wouldn't cover gas & oil for the plane.

Now there's good money that literally went up in smoke. A Mistagain MBA must've thought that one up. Some choice billboard ads would have stayed up longer for the short-term memory crowd.

TZ is correct. A Sparty alum who is also a pilot saw the "go blue" at Spartan Stadium and figured that a zealous was behind it. He also estimated that it cost several thousand dollars to pull such a stunt. Rather that respond in kind, he challenged members of the MSU Alumni Association to join him in donating to the Ovarian Cancer Research of Michigan program. This program is housed at UofM and his wife has been succesfully treated at UofM for ovarian cancer. His thought was that after the Spartan alums donated, they would challenge UofM alums to match the amount. It turned out that it wasn't an alum, but the UofM Athletic Department that paid for the skywriting. Nevertheless, the Spartans are raising money for ovarian cancer research in response. GO GREEN!

By contrast, money well-spent. Kudos to the Sparty alumni, DS.
