Caps pan icing rule: 'I hate it'

07:28 AM ET 09.20 | While the sample size remains small, the NHL's hybrid icing experiment, at least in Washington, is a flop. "I hate it," Capitals veteran left wing Jason Chimera said. "I mean, there's so much confusion." Adopted by the AHL last season, hybrid icing is on trial by the NHL during the preseason and will be voted on by the league and its players sometime next week. "I'm pretty sure we'll get it turned down," Caps defenseman Jack Hillen said. "If it's indicative of our locker room, it'll get turned down." ... "Right now, it actually makes the defenseman's job harder and he might be even more vulnerable," Hillen said. "I personally don't like it as-is right now. I thought I would like it and I thought it would be safer but I don't think that now."

My but the Caps are a complaining lot so far this season....
But they are right on this for certain

Mid-season form. But, I also agree.

So the Caps don't like hybrid icing? They probably just keep forgetting to plug it in.

that was beyond be-Leaf

Personally I think they have to do something with icing. If not this then something else.

Nope. Disconcur.

I'm all for automatic icing.

I don't know...beating an icing call is a great thing

And some of the unnecessary collisions are bad things. Some of the ballistic missiles out there do nothing but run defensemen on those plays. Guys like Hansen on the Canucks.

Icing has lost it's need to be played out.

That is true but far to often only one player skates away. The risk of injury isn't worth it.
I go with Hank on the automatic icing

September 20, 2013  11:47 AM ET

gotta go with Hank on this one...love it when they beat the icing but not worth the risk... if it was the old days with no armor...I'd say go for it...but too easy to lose a dman for the season with the icing as it is now

I'm on the fence about this particular issue, but we've gotta draw the line on rules changes in the name of player safety soon before hockey is played on a marshmallow surface with the players driving Rascals encased in oversized hamster balls.

I as well. Maybe need to play the puck, no contact?

I said it before if the puck goes over both blue lines they should blow the whistle, but if it only goes over one blue line, the race is on to touch it first.

I'm all for the good hard clean hit....just not a fan of the race that ends with one guy getting boarded by the trailing player at 50 mph....just because he can't get to the puck first

Contact is fine. This one gets abused though.

It's the one time the red line comes into play.....
