08:55 AM ET 09.21 | Cubs closer Kevin Gregg threw down the gauntlet Friday but later apologized after criticizing team president Theo Epstein. After taking the loss earlier in the day against the Braves, Gregg said he believed Epstein sent a message through manager Dale Sveum when Sveum placed Pedro Strop in the closer's role for the rest of the season. "The game didn't unfold the way I wanted it to, but from what they told me over the past few days it makes it difficult to play anyways, let alone knowing what they think," Gregg said. "... For an organization to come out and say, 'Hey, we are going to go a different direction,' a little professional courtesy would have been nice." Epstein said he would consider releasing the veteran pitcher. This was the third confrontation between the Cubs and staff in the past four days.

Well golly! What courage that would take. The guy is a free agent to be and there are about 8 meaningless games left. He was out of there regardless.

Theo Epstein AIN'T no wonder boy. Never was at Boston - if he was he'd still be there. Actions like this come when you are panicking (losing) and have no answers (GM). Theo is in both categories, just like his last years at Boston.

Still loving Theo Cubs fans? Think it is going to get better? LOL The Red Sox steadily declined during his tenure. It took a miracle from the Dodgers to bail the Sox out of the mess he created.

But hey, the Cubs will "only" lose 95 games this season!

No matter, he fits in nicely with the other gaggle of Cub malcontents that have filled the GM position. Sandberg would have quickly lost his golden boy luster as well running this group. It's still too early to call. If his plan works out a few years down the road, people will praise him. If not, it will be the usual expected status quo
