Few changes for Mountaineers

Don't expect the new coaching staff to stick with every single element of the previous West Virginia offensive and defensive playbooks, but the Mountaineers' new offensive coordinator and incumbent defensive coordinator said yesterday that fans will see much of that same stuff as in recent, successful seasons. The offense figures to undergo more minor remodeling than the rest. First-time coordinator Jeff Mullen, who oversees an offense with four new assistants and one vital mainstay in fourth-year quarterback Patrick White, said his unit likely will carry a new terminology, a tweaked playbook and a spread style replete with more motion, more quick passes and downfield throws, more pass protection schemes and more runs from slotbacks.

See thats a good move not making overall changes to a program that been working when you have changes through the staff

February 14, 2008  09:50 AM ET

tweaking sounds like a good move; but, there needs to more than tweaking on the defense.

February 14, 2008  11:17 AM ET

More downfield throws...thank you. We all knew Pat White could run, but he also has a cannon of an arm. Hopefully this new staff will let him open it up a bit, putting more pressure on defenses to commit to the secondary, opening up the field for monsters like Devine.

I thought the knock on White was that he couldn't throw downfield????

i smell a bomb going off but in a bad way. This guy is taking this ship one direction: ocean floor.

"but he also has a cannon of an arm" - edub187

The scouts have said over and over that he has a substandard arm in both strength and accuracy. Now all of a sudden he has a "canon"?

Also, after the past few years and your impressive win over Oklahoma in the bowl, why would you really think you need to change to more downfield passing plays?

February 14, 2008  02:42 PM ET

No changes? Daggum..and here I was looking forward to the return of the Single Wing

February 14, 2008  02:50 PM ET

WVU needs some tweaking. If I have to sit through another season of bubble screen, bubble screen, pat white run for 20+ yards, bubble screen, bubble screen.... I think I may vomit.

February 14, 2008  02:53 PM ET

I think Oklahoma saw a little of White's cannon when he hit Tito for a TD in the fiesta bowl. How in the hell would scouts.com or anyone know if he did have a cannon when he wasn't allowed to throw the ball down field.

February 14, 2008  04:08 PM ET

Pat White and Noel Devine once again will run wild through the Big (L)East.

February 14, 2008  06:35 PM ET

Hova, you know how annoying it is when people refer to the big 10 as the little 10 so I don't think the 'Big LEast' comment was necessary.

Sure they'll have some changes, they have a new coach. They'll still stick with the basic plan though, it's what their team has been built on.

February 14, 2008  11:52 PM ET

It would've been fun to see the wishbone run with White, Schmitt, Slaton, and Devine. But noooo, Slaton had to try to make money and Stewart had to cling to remaining bits of Rodriguez's success.

Not much college football news here. I guess it's time for Terrell Pryor to add another school to his list...

February 15, 2008  12:27 PM ET

I myself can't waite for football season to start so i can watch WEST VIRGINIA,S offense destroy the BIG EAST and everyone else. Not worried about defense it'll be fine .

February 15, 2008  12:34 PM ET

Hope that TP does decide to go to MU, because that,s when NCAA will start investigation into RICH FRAULD cell phone calls to recruits before left for MU.

February 15, 2008  04:44 PM ET

PebbleBeachScrotum - You must be referring to Rich Rod. I wouldn't be too discouraged, you'll find a quarterback.

Pebble,

No, on this one, you're wrong. I doubted Stew for a while. Now, I'm sold! He has put together an amazing, diverse staff , from programs like, UF,Wake,UK and ND to name a few. Then, they proceded to blow our minds with the recruiting job they did in so little time. If you want to argue *Rankings, then it's moot. WVU has only had 1 top 20 class, EVER! This was our second best rated class EVER, in a MONTH!! i'm SOLD!

Jabril,
I was worried about our D, and still am a tad. However, we retained DC of the year Randy Casteel, and have a much stronger defensive staff. The addition of Tevita Finau on the DL will be felt immediately!! We have some great DB's coming and we're always solid in the middle. Depth, that's the only worry.

One last thing,
Don't freak when you see the..........triple option, that was one of our new OCs favorite sets, just to throw ppl off. I guess that wasn't the last thing.
I've been to many a WVU game, and watched Pat for the entire warm ups, he does have a cannon, trust me!! Hope we see it alot
Is it football season yet??
Peace
