USC plays to more yawns than boos

10:08 AM ET 09.22 | Mush on? That seems to be the new theme of the USC football team, which beat Utah State by a field goal Saturday in a game that Coach Lane Kiffin accurately described as "mushy." An hour before the game, in the usually teeming streets around the Coliseum, there was smooth traffic and zero buzz. At kickoff, the Coliseum was about half full with a crowd that was barely awake. During the game, there were scattered boos, a few strong cheers, and mostly shrugs. It felt like the desolate Dodger Stadium in the last days of the Frank McCourt era. The Trojans even played like the Dodgers in those final days, barely hanging on as if waiting for somebody to rescue them. On Saturday, that somebody was Utah State punter Jaron Bentrude, whose 12-yard shank set up the Trojans' momentous 16-yard drive that resulted in Andre Heidari's 25-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter to give the Trojans an eventual 17-14 victory. Yeah, mush on.

Not a Lame fan but its hard to get excited about a noon kickoff east or left coast.

As an USC fan I was not happy with their offense at all, now their defense is very good. They better get their offense in gear, or they will get the butts handed to them next weekend.

People in LA too stoned to care ...

This is very interesting indeed.

Take note all you 4 and 5 star recruits. Do you really want Kiffin as your coach?

Notre Dame didn't exactly knock the cover off the bar either... wait... I think they just called another pass interference call on MSU! That was one of the most one-sided officiating games I've seen in quite a while.

USC looks a lot like the USC teams previous to Pete Carroll's arrival.... irrelevant.

Hey whats that sound? I think you guys just put up another 6 on the Rattlers.

Whats that make the score now, 210- 0.

Wow the rest of the college football world is really impressed!

Sparty got beat on the long ball every time, so their only option to prevent a blowout was to grab jerseys.

Simple as that.

Your Big-10 refs got it right this time,, for once.

Point of fact about why OSU scheduled FA&M. They had Vanderbilt scheduled for the date but the Commodores pulled out late of a H&H deal. Options for opponents were limited but FA&M stepped up to absorb the beating for $900 large!

That's not quite what I saw. I saw some push offs by receivers (not called) and some ticky-tacky calls. Your team lost to Michigan who had it's hands full with Akron and UConn. Your Domers team looks very average this year.

Brian Kelly only has 4 more wins than Kiffin, and 2 of those should be losses, this season. And those two teams aren't good, especially Purdue. I have no doubt SC will wipe out ND at USC stadium in South Bend, again this year. What's that 10 years in a row that SC has beaten ND in south bend now? And the Irish Luck will finally start to turnaround next weekend, and in the right direction, for me.

USC is entering another irrelevant period Sandy. ND wallowed in its own for the past 20 years. Be prepared for an ND winning streak in the series ( 3 out of the last 4 after this year)...

Well yes, Tommy Rees was never meant to be the lead man.

Golson screwed up and Gunner Kiel made a mistake transferring to Cincy.

No one can predict these things. One has to play with the hand one is dealt.

We will see how the Irish handle the Sooners this Saturday. Then we will see whos average.
