Bleak outlook in Pens' crease

07:28 AM ET 09.23 | Coming off a season in which the position became a question mark, the Penguins enter 2013-14 without any definitive answers in goal. [Marc-Andre Fleury] suddenly is the franchise's lone proven goalie. Tomas Vokoun, star of the Penguins' playoff run, is out indefinitely after surgery Saturday to dissolve a blood clot. Coach Dan Bylsma said Sunday he did not expect to have much of an update on Vokoun for "the next few days." Bylsma also acknowledged that Vokoun's injury had changed the goaltending situation. "If the backup goalie is Jeff Zatkoff, it would be different how many games Marc would play in, which games and in terms of how we schedule," Bylsma said. Zatkoff, 26, spent last season as the starter for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, but he has never played in the NHL.

Best wishes to Vokoun. He should take as long as he needs. The longer the better. Maybe even sit out the season.

+1 good luck Vokoun!... On another note...this is not at all good for the Pens...if MAF is what they're going with it's going to be a long season. Maybe he'll prove me wrong but I think he's toast.

agree on all points, though if MAF is out to prove he still "has it"...this would be a pretty good time to do so

We're screwed. I was at the game Saturday. MAF gave up three goals on six shots. I think (other than the Pirates being a surprise), it is going to be a bad Fall for Pittsburgh sports!

Fleury really needs to resurrect himself. I mean it would be horrible if he was done....well maybe not!

Well .... Tim Thomas was there for the taking. Lucky for you Ilya Nikolayevich Bryzgalov's still available. :-)

I think W2's still drunk. Definitely their highlight of the year to date.

I know I have caught crapola in here before, but I like CFL ...it's different game (sort of)and I for one like the wider/longer field

"Poor Pens are stuck with their cup winning franchise goalie." He says with internet sarcasm.

Seriously. I won't say the Pirates are in free fall, but its a pretty rapid descent, the Steelers are going to be cited by the EPA for odor violations and now we are stuck with someone in a Fluery sweater doing a Louongoal impersonation.

Zatkoff had a GAA of a little over 2 in the regular season, but he pulled a Fluery in the playoffs and Thiessen is the one who carried them to the third round.

Only 6 more months to spring training.

MAF can let in a million goals in the pre-season or zero and it has the same outcome. I'm not worried about how the goalie is playing behind guys getting the rust off, JR level players and scrubs trying to make the team. He'll be fine in the reg season, one of the Pens younger backups will get some experience, Voki should be back before playoffs.

That one may be useful for another couple of weeks or so.
