07:23 AM ET 09.24 | Twins fans will have to wait until 2014 to see hometown favorite Joe Mauer take another swing. General manager Terry Ryan announced Monday that the Twins have shut down their catcher for the remainder of the season because of post-concussion symptoms. "You can't speed up the process," Ryan said before the Twins' game against Detroit on Monday night at Target Field. Mauer, who batted .324 in 113 games this season, was openly frustrated. "I'm not able to play the game that I love," he said. "It's disappointing. All this time I've been working to try to get back on the field. I gave it a good go and just wasn't able to get back out there." Mauer, out since Aug. 20 after he took a foul ball off his catcher's mask during a game the night before, has had no recent setbacks during his workout.

There's a spot open at first base.

Being the face of the franchise Joe you will be back in 14 and sad to say but probably will retire as a losing Twinkle.

A concussion is nothing to trifle with....... just take the time, and for God Sakes - move him to first.....

The problem is, he's only worth what he's being paid if he a catcher. He's way over paid as a first baseman or corner OF.

True - but that kind of long term deal for a catcher was stupid in the first place.

Yea, but he still has great hair!

I think he's being paid $10m per year more than the second highest salary ever for a major league catcher.

I will correct myself. Posey has a 9 yr/$167M contract.

Mauer was signed as the face of the franchise to an above market deal.
If he had gone FA he would have commanded big $$$, and the fans would have been outraged.
All in all, he's still an asset to a non- competitive team as a 1st baseman, keeps butts in seats, and tuning in to games.

Molina also makes 14 to 15 mil per year. that contract is looking better all the time.

What does that make Salty worth in the FA market as he catches the Red Sox into the World Series?

Molina won two before he got that contract.
