Vogelsong's struggles have him in Giant limbo

07:23 AM ET 09.24 | It wasn't all that long ago the notion of not picking up Ryan Vogelsong's option would seem absurd. That decision gets more complicated by the start, and Vogelsong had another bad one Saturday, giving up five runs over five innings of a 6-0 loss to the New York Yankees. The right-hander has a 5.90 ERA in a season interrupted by a fractured finger and has given up 20 earned runs in his past five starts. But Vogelsong said the stretch has been a learning experience more than anything, and he's hopeful that he will be in the same clubhouse when he puts it all back together. Vogelsong signed a two-year, $8.3 million deal before the 2012 season that includes a $6.5 million club option for the 2014 season. "If I was pitching better right now, it's probably not even a question," he said of the club's decision.

Well, yes, Supergenius, if you were 25-0 with a 0.00 ERA the Giants probably wouldn't have to think too hard about picking up that option.

At the prices these pitchers are getting today 6.5 is a steal, and the Giants know if he is release so other team is waiting for the opportunity to sign him fort the 14 season.

He's 36 though and may be at that point in his career where expecting him to start 30 games and throw 175+ innings could be expecting too much.

This galls me..... not your comment - but the expectation that 30 games, and 175 innings is note worthy......

You're onto something there. There should be some options out there for a lot less.

Doesn't look like he'll start next year anyway. Most likely the Giants will go with Bumgarner, Cain, Lincecum, Gaudin and Petit. Vogelsong is probably looking at spot starts or long releif. The pay for even those spots ain't bad.
