Flyers' D-man on the block

07:30 AM ET 09.24 | During this last week of NHL camps, of course, roster cuts are looming. What to do with all these defensemen, and who is the sixth and seventh man to start the season? From the four days in Lake Placid to Monday's practice at the Wells Fargo Center, the defensive pairings have not changed. Andrej Meszaros and Nick Grossmann remain the third pair with young Erik Gustafsson as the apparent seventh, odd man out. ... They won't trade [Gustafsson]. That would be crazy at this point -- which raises an interesting scenario. Could what we are seeing right now be nothing more than the Flyers "showcasing" Meszaros and trying to prove he is healthy to other clubs, so that they can soon move him via trade? That makes the most sense. Meszaros has a $4 million cap hit.

Wouldn't the Flyers rather have Meszaros over Streit!? Just baffling that they'd sign all these deals and then force out a better defensive player for an offense defensemen who's declining. Meszaros is only, what, 28?

What? Are you questioning Holmgren? He's gotten the Flyers where they are today and he will continue to lead them . . . . . uhhhhh continue to lead them . . . . . . probably lead them into the abyss. As a Pens fan and you as an Isles fan shouldn't question any of his moves. Just be happy.

This is Paul Holmgren's idea of being creative with the salary cap. He hopes somebody out there is dumb enough to bite. We'll see if it works.

So is Streit. He missed an entire year and is old.
