Rangers GM dials up rhetoric on Stepan

07:32 AM ET 09.24 | For nearly two weeks, the absence of restricted free agent center Derek Stepan has hung over Rangers camp. [Monday night] MSG Network aired a taped interview of reiterating his hard line in contract negotiations with [Stepan], but in more direct terms than before. "I don't think Derek is going to let this thing linger that long," Sather told MSG of Stepan's preseason holdout, which reached 13 days on Monday. "I don't think he is a big enough fool to think that he will sit out the year and it will do any good." Sather, whose decision to retain veteran center Brad Richards' $6.7 million cap hit has hamstrung the franchise's spending power, also said it is "unfortunate (Stepan) has listened to his agent," Matt Oates of O2K Worldwide Management.

I'm still perplexed why teams like the Islanders, Senators and Predators haven't sent Stepan an offer sheet. Each have cap space and a need at center, plus a reduced need for high draft picks as each team is a fringe playoff contender who could be one very good two-way center from serious contention.

Shoot, even teams like Calgary and Florida who are terminally terrible at evaluating draft talent should be in the offer sheet line.

I know it's been an unwritten rule to not do that but I agree. I'd like to see GMs say eff it, we need a better team, this guy is good and we can afford him. Teams that over commit and over spend shouldn't hamstring players that are due a raise.

I'd gladly take Stephan on the Isles. God knows that rivarly is lingering on the back burner just waiting for something to spark it.

Glen Sather showing once again the great "people skills" that have made him a top GM

September 24, 2013  09:14 AM ET

Yep, a first round pick... Stepan was drafted 51st overall in 2008.

Here's a list of centers drafted before him:

1 TBL Steven Stamkos

7 NSH Colin Wilson

9 NYI Josh Bailey

10 VAN Cody Hodgson

14 CAR Zach Boychuk

16 BOS Joe Colborne

21 WSH Anton Gustafsson

22 EDM Jordan Eberle

25 CGY Greg Nemisz

26 BUF Tyler Ennis

29 ATL Daultan Leveille

33 STL Philip McRae

35 ANA Nicolas Deschamps

36 NYI Corey Trivino

39 ANA Eric O'Dell

44 BUF Luke Adam

47 BOS Max Sauve

48 CGY Mitch Wahl

51 NYR Derek Stepan

Perhaps I'm not brainless enough to be a pro sports GM, but I'd rather fill my team with guaranteed top-line talent than bet my job at the roulette wheel.

I don't get it. Why go public with crap like this? If I'm Sather, just sit back and say something like "We've offered a deal that we feel is fair, it's up to Derek at this point"

Instead he insinuates that Stephan is a fool.

to put it succintly:
SATHER IS AN IDIOT....THE ONLY REASONS HE IS STILL WITH THE NYR IS THAT HE (OBVIOUSLY) HAS INCRIMINATING PICTURES OF DOLAN....AND HE IS EVEN TOO RIDICULOUS TO WORK FOR DWARFUS

Thanks for clearing that up Spiny. I wasn't sure how you felt :)

Maybe he wouldn't be so out of touch if they got him a rotary phone.

I'm guessing you're reacting to my comment. I'll just go ahead and say straight up that Derek Stepan isn't worth a 1st or 2nd overall pick, which is likely where Florida and Calgary will be drafting come June. And Jordan Eberle isn't a centre, and i'd take him ten times over Stepan.

You're right, he isn't worth a top two pick. But what guarantee does Calgary and Florida have that they will receive a top two pick? There is an 82-game season and a draft lottery yet to be played out. And where might any of those teams be in April with Stepan leading the charge?

To be clear, if I'm Calgary and Florida, I'm most likely not going to send an offer sheet to Stepan, but I am at least considering it. If I'm the Isles, Sens or Preds I would've sent an offer sheet months ago.

Bingo! Stepan took Richards minutes last year and thrived for ONE season; with Nash on the wing. Does one season make him immediately worth 3 or 3+ million per year that him and his agent think he is worth? Not in my opinion. I'd give him max 2 mil a yr. and thats pushing it.

I said this last year, Richards comes back and has a pretty decent statistical year. Danny, I like my centers as Step, Richards, Brassard and Moore. No Steppan, then I am fine with Richards, Brassard, Moore and let Monte Christo or Lingbergh stay up at the outset.

Center is not the problem, look at all the garbage at the wings on the 3rd and 4th line. Dorsett, Asham, Boyle et al. Taking prime spots from the kids....there is a couple of million worth of fat that could be trimmed and couldve went to Stepans contract....

LMAO. I can't understand why you're so supportive of Sather Spiny? Frankly, I think Puck is right on target with comment #10. Oh well, this is at least as much fun as watching Duck Dynasty.

You probably think the Kessel trade was a good one, too.

Now, now Danny no need to insult the man.
