Bird sets goal at Finals appearance

07:16 AM ET 09.25 | Larry Bird isn't one for softening expectations or setting a bar low enough to clear. So the question was asked of the Indiana Pacers president just a few days before the start of training camp Saturday. "Does this team have the potential to win a world championship?" He never blinked. "Yes," he said. "We're all in." Why wouldn't he feel that way? Why wouldn't there be title aspirations for a team that took the Miami Heat to a seventh game of the Eastern Conference finals? ... "Anything less than (a Finals appearance or a conference finals appearance) would be a disappointment," he said. "I think anything over 50 wins is a good season, but I believe we're built more for the playoffs than we are for the regular season. Because we're deep and we'll have time to prepare. It's hard to beat 10 or 11 guys."

This is why Bird was one the top 5 all time players.

Yup. Too bad for the Pacers he's not playing.

It will be tougher this year for the east. Almost all of the top 5 seeds got better.

The pacers have a chance but it's going to be tough to get to the finals in the east

Miami, Indy and Chicago are gonna give us some good playoff battles this year for sure. It's just a matter of who is healthy and which team plays harder.

I would add the Nets too.

While the Nets have the talent to succeed. I'm not gonna put them in that category with those three proven teams. With a rookie coach, and a cast of players who aren't all use to playing with one another it'll take them time to decide who has to sacrifice their ego to allow the team to succeed. Not to mention the age of the Nets.

i don't c ego's on that team being a problem. It may take them a minute 2 gel, but with the majority of them being vets it won't take as long as some seem 2 think it will.

Pacers should give Miami a great run, just like happened this last playoffs. Same for the Bulls with Rose back.
