Rangers have the cash to end Stepan's holdout

07:32 AM ET 09.26 | Glen Sather may have meant every word he said Monday night when he sent a shot across the bow of preseason holdout Derek Stepan and his agent. But realize that behind all this rhetoric and public pressuring, assistant GM Jeff Gorton has crunched the numbers of all possible scenarios, which means he must have realized by now the obvious: The Rangers have the money. They don't enough to give Stepan whatever he wants. And if the Rangers compromise above the $3 million per year mark, they won't have much flexibility -- if any at all -- under the $64.3 million NHL salary cap ceiling. But that simply means a trade is likely down the road to free some cash. In the short term, they can pay Stepan. It's just about how they want to get there.

Is this really considered a holdout? It's not like Stepan HAS a contract at present time.

Let him sit without a paycheck, he will eventually come around

He's a restricted free agent. Anybody can offer him a contract, which will force Sather to match or settle for draft picks.

What did Nonis ever do?

All I know is he just signed Kadri, Franson and Raymond for less than $6 million. No matter how you look at it that's impressive.

Guilt by association......:-)

I actually kinda like Little Davey.

And you'll love Raymond if you want someone to skate in circles around the offensive zone really, really fast. But I thought you had someone that already did that?

*Looks over at Calgary...*

LOL - I saw (I don't remember where) that Burkie always likes a "Star" on his team. The Kessel trade was mentioned as an example.

So this could happen Danny. Merry Christmas.
