08:08 AM ET 09.29 | The USC Trojans have finally made their move, as Athletic Director Pat Haden announced the firing of maligned head football coach Lane Kiffin this morning. According to USC Athletics' official site, Haden informed Kiffin of his decision during their travel back from Tempe to Los Angeles after dropping a 62-41 result to the now 3-1 Arizona State Sun Devils.

The way Kiffin's career has gone, I expect that tomorrow he will be named head coach of the New England Patriots and receive a heft raise. I've never seen a guy "fail up" as well as him.

Very much needed. Games like last might and recruits woulda been avoiding us like the plague. Hang on to your 5*'s, there's gonna be some new blood in town.

Well I guess something had to happen. However this Fansided article is extremely bush league. Fansided shouldn't be a quotable source for news.

True he has fallen up but no more. No major program will hire him at this point. At best an OC or HC at a I -AA school or position coach in the No Fun League.

So now I guess you guys can get on with your coaching search?

USC, UTx, COC

These jobs will get virtually every coach in America an upgrade or a big fat raise

Get on with??? Haden is a smart guy (having Lane around this long aside) and of course has had a handful of guys on the radar. The timing tells me he either already has the guy picked out, or he is going to use the next 7 as an audition. My guess is he hires the permanent guy sometime in December.

I would think Sarkisian would be at the top

As a fan of the Irish, I have ambivalent feelings. With Lane as HC, USC seemed doomed to more years of mediocrity (that's the bad side of his firing). But on the other hand I think things will be better overall for college football with a strong USC program.

Maybe Tennessee will take him back.

I doubt it. He's too entrenched at u dub. Our next guy comes from the NFL, or one of a small handful of guys already head coaches in ncaa.

GREAT recruiter and coach. Not a HC.

Any insights into who could be named as interim HC?

Disagree. His fame alone will attract recruits in college and his last name has some "cache" in the NFL. I also don't believe he will be judged to harshly for his USC experience since Carrol created that mess and let's be honest, the Raiders have been a dumpster fire for ever and nobody could succeed there with Al Davis alive and insane.
