Who will Giants hire when Tom Coughlin's gone?

08:48 AM ET 09.29 | Tom Coughlin has to bear his share of the blame for 0-3, just as Mike Tomlin does in Pittsburgh, as Mike Shanahan does in RG3ville. All of them are elite head coaches, all of them have won Super Bowls, and none of them belong on any hot seat. The Giants and Steelers have been models of continuity and stability at the top, and sometimes the best firings are the ones you don't make (Coughlin following the 2006 season). So by no means is this the start of any "Tom must go" movement. Been there, done that. But there isn't an NFL team that doesn't prepare a contingency plan for the future, and the Giants have a short list of head coaching candidates just as the 31 other franchises do. So who might it one day be? 1. John Fox (Broncos): He would be my first choice, if available. 2. Bill O'Brien (Penn State): A tower of strength during the Sandusky-Paterno travails. 3. Mike Zimmer (Bengals): If Bill Parcells can't understand why the Cincy defensive coordinator hasn't gotten a head coaching opportunity, I sure can't. No one likes playing against his defenses. 4. Mike Sullivan (Buccaneers): Coached under Coughlin for eight years and a military man who brought Col. Greg Gadson to Giants. 5. Ken Whisenhunt (Chargers): The San Diego offensive coordinator came within a last-minute Santonio Holmes TD catch of winning Super Bowl XLIII as coach of the Cardinals and has Steeler roots.

Will It Matter, Bros?

0-3 start? Big deal. The Giants can get on a roll and blow through the playoffs. They've done it before. This is the mediocre pairity league.

"...But there isn't an NFL team that doesn't prepare a contingency plan for the future ..."

WRONG! Jerry Jones has no plan.

The OL is that bad. Snee out Bass out and young guys moved around. It will not get better this year.

Coughlin will get a two year contract after this year. Fewell will be replaced as the DC. Snee, Bass, Webster, Tuck and others gone.

Don't be daft man, that's exactly what you're doing. You're just trying to make it smell nice.

I appears he's already gone.

Exactly what I was thinking.

Nice. I hope he stays. The man did not forget how to coach, 53 guys forgot how to play.

An implosion like this takes a focused effort from the owner all the way down to the water boy.

Rex Ryan should be available...

September 29, 2013  10:03 AM ET

If Zimmer was available, the Giants should consider making the move. Tom can still coach, but you have to start considering his age.

I've always wondered why Mike Zimmer hasn't been able to get a HC gig of his own. His name always seems to pop up on the shot list of assistant coaches who are ready to take the next step.

He'll be the next Redskins DC... if Shanny survives this season.

I can't figure it out either. He seems like the perfect choice, but I don't think he even gets interviewed, his name just gets floated. He would seem to be a perfect match for the Giants.

The Giants have always let the GM make the final call on personnel. That is why Parcells left when George Young told him no way will you do my job. Reece should be a little nervous too. Who decided that Diehl and Snee and Tuck and Webster and Bass still had game left in them? Was it just payback for the superbowls lately? There is blame a plenty to pass around for this mess.

Bill Cowher. Not that Tom is gone yet or anything.

He is still number one on their list. And his list too.
