Denny Hamlin hopes to avoid surgery

10:38 AM ET 09.29 | If Denny Hamlin were to give Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Matt Kenseth a performance review for the first 28 races of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season, the verdict would be "Meets Expectations." Though Kenseth's breakout career-best seven-win season may have stunned casual observers, Hamlin wasn't the least bit surprised at his new teammate's success. Hamlin has endured health issues of his own this year. He suffered a compression fracture of his first lumbar vertebra in a wreck at Fontana, Calif., in late March, missed four races subsequently and made an early exit from his car at Talladega. A chronic issue with bulging discs has kept him in pain throughout the season, with little opportunity to heal. Hamlin hopes to use the offseason to recuperate fully and concedes that surgery might be an option.

Its the end of the world as we know it!!

September 29, 2013  12:53 PM ET

After all the Nascar news that has happened in the last month.. we get this??.. a thread that doesn't have anything to do with whats been going on in Nascar right now.. but a non-story about how Hamlin 'might' need to have surgery once the season is ended

Wonder if this has anything to do with Congress delaying funding Obamacare for a year and then Fannation hiring all the interns back which they had laid off and putting their full time people back to 40 hours instead of 29 because they didn't want to pay for their insurance??

Did Jr play the Co card today? He has 4 new grabbers, runs up on JJ like he can pass at any time ... and then drops back to finish second. Jr hasn't a Chinamans chance of winning the Chase ... but JJ does. JJ will need all he points he can get. Does anyone think the word came from RH himself?

are you by any chance suggesting that a team mate might have manipulated the race results by holding back?........LMAO

The suggestion is funny.......I think it boils down to Jr not being able to close the deal anymore.
I'm a Jr fan but the facts are facts.

But I agree, there were a few times that Jr could have passed and he did not even seem to try.

That is the best pic of Hamlin I have ever seen.......he usually looks like the dork of the year.......but this one makes him look like a racer.......well done FN

I hate thinking like that.......but it makes sense that Jr might have been under pressure, not to push harder.....who knows.

Nice finish for JR! Boring race, no one seems to have wanted to rub other drivers to gain a spot.
Changes coming for NASCAR,s cars next season.
Good to see a new story no matter how lame.

I know what your saying but think about this.....with K.Bush ,Kenseth and JJ only 12 pts seperating them and JJ and Jr start racin for 1st place and Kyle was right behind them .......what if Jr bumps JJ or vice versa and Kyle and Kenseth pass them both it could really hurt JJ chances , Jr stays behind JJ like a good teammate and blocks ..........Jr is basically out of the chase anyways.

Like I said -- orders from higher HQ who just happened to be in JJs pit ... it seemed right after the restart Jr could pass whenever he was ready ... and then drops back to finish second. JJ will need all he points he can get. Who knows what would have happened if Jr and JJ got to rubbin' -- Candy Boy would probably have gotten around both of them at that point.
